Iíve been on a few trips today and Iím really starting to like Odyssey. The Maps look a little plain compared to Garmin but it really has some useful information on screen, and compared to Garmin this info is WAY easier to view. The turn views are great, especially the Roundabout view and information about the next turn comes as the current turn is compleated, way before you get there, really nice and the small next turn preview window is also easy to pick at a glance.
Garmin Rerouting for a missed turn has always been pretty fast but Odyssey was lightning fast at times. Changing between fastest, shortest or economical route calculations came up with some interesting route mapping but I need time to play with that.
I wanted the option to select either GPS system in the FE, both hardware and software, so I have a 2nd GPS mouse on the way but it has not shown up yet. So for now to switch between Garmin and Odyssey on the fly I quickly programmed the FE to - 1 Close Odyssey, 2 Close GpsGate, 3 start GMPC. These steps are automatic and take a second or so. Itís the reverse when Odyssey is reselected as the current GPS app and all done with a Double-Push of the FE Touch-Screen GPS Menu Button.
Map updates appear to be half the obscene price that Garmin Australia charged for their last update, unless I get lifetime updates, but the way they dropped the GMPC app makes me wonder when that products ďlifetimeĒ is actually going to end.

Here are two small videos from the front and rear webcams recorded in an underground car park. The light is actually pretty dim in there which is noticeable on the HD-5000 as it tries to compensate, normally for night recording I set the exposure to a preset value on this camera.
Web Camís are a HD5000 is 1280x 720 @ 30 fps and Logitech is 1280 x 720 @ 15 fps.
Web cameras are mounted just in front of the rear view mirror and rear camera is behind a small hole with a sealed glass plate next to the number plate. The Vehicle reversing camera is a separate CCD wired directly to the monitor.
I use MiniCam controlled from my FE. It will automatically split the file size as its recording and it allows you to set a max total directory size. When the dir limit is reached it starts overwriting the oldest files. It handles multiple cameras by running multiple instances with a win name of MiniCma1, MiniCam2 etc. So FE embedding and controlling is straight forward.
I run a SSD for the OS and a 500GB Laptop HDD for Music and drive recordings. Anything I want to keep can be downloaded via a USB3 port onto my backup 500GB USB3 drive.

A quick (rough) screen captures of the FE control for the two Web Cams. The menus and all webcam control is via the feDrive control panel and Encoder, of course they can be controlled via the touch screen as well.
This was recorded on the Workshop PC and the FE is being controlled by a rough test jig setup of the feDrive control panel thatís in the Vehicle. As this is a 24Ē widescreen and not a touch screen you will see a mouse pointer at times and the capture is not a crisp or as clear as the 8Ē Car-PC screen. The Vehicle interface controllers and Sound control microprocessors are not connected, hence the Mute ICON on the Home menu.
In the video Iím mostly turning the feDrive Rotary encoder to scroll the cameras and options. Iím then pushing the encoder knob to select the indicated option. This same procedure can control all FE menus. When the Home Menu snaps back thats the Home button on the feDrive panel being pushed.
The voice announcement of each option can be turned off. However, as the feDrive control panel is mounted in the console between the front seats and I may want to control a camera for start or stop a recordingís without looking at the screen, itís then that voice announcements come in really handy.
Obviously the views are not from the vehicle forward and rear web cams but two spare cams in the workshop.
Are you still using that board you designed that has the pair of 16-bit chips you had programmed? Is there any chance I could order a set of them for my project?
I'm just looking to do enough to display temperature and climate control info on a 16x2 char display.
Hi Ryven, yes and it must be almost 2 years now and they have been running the Climate control system in both manual and PC SW control modes without a single glitch.
If you only want to display temperature and HVAC system info (you’re removing the factory Radio) and you are still using the existing HVAC controller and controls, then I may be able to program one Microcontroller to do that and use only a few external components. Something you could make up yourself if I sent the Micro pre-programmed.
Thats cool how you did the webcams. How does it look during night driving with car approaching from the front and back with headlights. I have a similar system to yours but I am using a separate blackbox recorder. I was scared that if the car pc were to be destroyed in an accident, all recording would stop, thus they would not know what happened. Also would be easy to retrieve the data. Mine also spits out as 2 files, front and rear. I rigged mine up though and connected a Security System Digital Quad Processor to it, so now the camera 2 file actually records 4 cameras. So thats a total of 5.

For night driving I manually set the exposure to a preset level, the result is really good with almost no headlight flare or blur. The video I mentioned was my first attempt and it was pretty good even at that.
Agree with you on wiping out the Video. Although the way this is built and the location would mean that I may not be around to worry about it anyway.
When the standalone units come down to what I think is a reasonable price with good resolution I will consider replacing the Car-PC units. Until then these are good for a cost of $80.00.
I remember looking at you post and what you installed, sure it was yours? Anyway I spent a lot of time looking for something to do what I wanted but at the time there was nothing in my price range.

If this chip would be different from your current designs, what I would want to do is have the 16x2 display show something like this:
With the top line showing the mode (auto, dash, dash combo, floor, defrost, defrost combo, a/c, max a/c, off) and the bottom line showing the temperatures on each side. I'm not concerned with fan speed.
This unit will be completely standalone from the PC. I will have buttons like the factory unit had, but I'll have no way of using the factory display.

I think that is where my system falls short. Because it is controlled by the blackbox, I can not adjust. Now the front camera does this on its own because the bb has that feature. The rear cams though, are connected to the dqp unit, maybe there is an option in there. Im going to have to play with it.

Ryven, yes I remember, health issues forced me stop everything. Iím slowly moving along (for a while at least) so I have enabled private messaging again.
The layout you want is almost how it is now; except the lines are swapped with temps are on the top line. Anyway drop me a line after New Year and Iíll see what I can do.
I may just quickly build a small unit and get it to you. All my micros have a Boot-loader and Iíll give you my Standalone app to reprogram it. Itís just one button press to reprogram the unit with a small file I send. This will allow small changes to layout or code to be made.
