Personally, I'd rather have her in the car.

Nah, those spikes will be likely to pierce the leather.

I've got a cloth interior. I've always wanted an excuse to upgrade to leather!

    Day 7:

My new cupholder arrived today, so it was time to mount the volume knob and on/off switch. After some measuring, I masked off where I wanted to drill the holes for the controls. The volume knob was easy, since I needed a 3/8" hole, but the power button proved to be a bit more of a challenge. I don't have a large enough bit, and my smallest hole saw is too big, so I drilled a 1/2" hole and then used two different size files to enlarge the hole until the power button fit. I removed the tape and verified the controls fit. There's a large gap between the two controls because the cigarette lighter is smack dab in the middle of the assembly, so I had to put the controls on either side. I don't think it matters much, since the controls are barely visible due to the position of the cupholder in the car.

Next I cleaned the cupholder and masked off the sections I didn't want to paint, then I hit it with two coats of the same paint I used for the dash. After about 20 minutes I checked the finish, then removed the tape and paper. Looking good!

Finally, I soldered the wires on to my power switch. Right now I send the ignition wire from the radio harness to my computer. The switch will go between the harness and the computer, so I can turn the entire system off when necessary.

Tomorrow after work I'll be removing the original cupholder assembly and installing my modified one. After that's done, the only thing I'll have left to do is to mount my Ram tough hub, the pc, and the amp.

My ODBLink arrived yesterday, so I threw it into the car to see how it worked. I have to admit I'm enjoying having all of that information at my fingertips!

    Thanks for reading.

    Day 8:

Today I removed my factory cupholder and installed the modified one with the on/off button and the amplifier audio control knob. It was very straightforward with no surprises, just two screws to remove and it basically falls out. I didn't want to remove the dash again, so it took me a bit of time to snake my hand behind the screen to get the ignition wire from the radio harness. Since I pulled all of the pins except for the ignition wire, it was pretty easy to find. After the wires were attached to the switch I zip-tied them to the cigarette wiring harness to keep them out of the way during the open/close action of the cupholder. I didn't wire the volume knob just yet as I want to wait until I have the amp, pc, and Ram tough hub mounted - I'm going to be running a USB cable for the hub, so it only makes sense to do all the cable routing at one time.

    That's it. Thanks for reading.
