Ok I got a response from the email I sent earlier. I also sent one back to them. Here they are!
Sounds like quite a project you've got in store.
The audio type has to be either analog or digital, both cannot work simultaneously.
The HDMI input on the display receiving signal from converter must be turned on for algorithms to handshake properly in the audio extraction process.
Thanks for inquiring and good luck with your project.
My response to them:
"Yes a project indeed! But if I can get the signals correct, I'll be so happy to do it! And of course I'm hoping we can make this converter work for me.
So the audio, I only need an analog signal for set up. I don't need to run it along with the digital signal. So once the set up on the processor is done, then I'll use the digital signal at all times.
So if I understand what you're saying with the displays, is that if I leave them on I'll have audio and video. If I turn them off, just turning them off not unplugging them, then I'll loose the audio along with it? Correct? If that's the case I think I understand, but I have a couple other questions to ask in regards to that.
1) What exactly is it that the module needs to see to make it think it's connected?
2) I was planning an HDMI splitter to run the HDMI signal to both screens. If that was constantly powered would that make the converter think that the signal was connected?
The screens I'm planning on using have a power, a ground, and an ignition (for auto on). They would have a constant power into them, and the ignition would act as the on off. I was planning to put a switch in there as well so I could manually turn them on and off at my desire. Would any of that make a difference in being able to get the audio to continue?
My last question for you, is what is your return policy? I'm planning on buying this from the Amazon.com site, so I think I need to defer to that correct? But what I'm asking is, if i get this, test it, and it doesn't work with my application, I can return it correct? I'm only in bench testing mode right now. Nothing is installed in my vehicle or anything like that. I want to make sure everything is working before I start custom installing things.
Thanks for your help, and prompt response, and I look forward to your answer to this as well. The sooner I can get these questions answered, the sooner I can get this thing and the closer I'll be to getting everything installed. Again, thanks!
So we'll see what they say. I think worst case scenario I'd have to leave the screens on at all times. I'm not sure I like that idea, but I may not have a choice with this module. Hopefully they'll comeback with some good news. I'm sure you guys already know the answers to those questions. I'm just not that smart!
it may not be too hard to be able to just switch the back light off... I think the screen does have to be on though because it is the one providing the handshake protocols I think, not the splitter which is more just a signal amplifier
^^^ I think it's a good idea to try. You could talk to the guys in that thread if they could implement the switch for you even.
OH MAN OH MAN have i got info to post. I'll be back in a minute and we can see what we can make of it all! I think we're home though. Be back in a minute!
Ok so I just posted the emails I sent back and forth with the company about this most recent converter. This was their response to those emails.
If you leave monitors on you'll have audio and video. If you turn them off, just turning them off not unplugging them, then you'll loose the audio along with it, correct.
1. The extractor requires the 5vdc provided in pin 19 of the HDMI cable from both ends in order to function.
2. Great question, I honestly don't know but if splitter is left on, should work.
We offer a 30 day no hassle return policy. All we ask is if you need to return the item, please return in as received retail packaging and re-salable condition.
Now then I just talked with someone on another forum, of many that I'm on, and they said they've used this one: Octava HDDA11V13 and it's worked getting audio out of it without the video on, or in this case the monitor. I just emailed them too, and this is the conversation so far. We're still emailing back and forth.
"I’m interested in this product. I’m doing a project trying to get a tablet customized into my car. The tablet has an HDMI port out, and a 3.5 mm jack out. I need to use the HDMI cause I need video and audio output. I’m using rear head rest monitors, that I’m hoping I can turn off at times (they’re for my kids.) but I understand that some converters don’t allow the audio to come through if the video isn’t on (or handshaking). Does your converter do that?
Meaning can I get audio if the monitor is not on.
My audio is going into an Audison Bit One processor, and that will operate my audio throughout the system. But when I’m not playing videos, and just listening to music, I want to be able to turn the monitors off.
Will this work with your product? I’m ready to buy now, I just am trying to make sure things are going to work first.
Also what’s your return policy? I’m bench testing stuff not completely installing so there would be no cut wires, no reason for this to be scratched or messed up. It would be as perfect as you sent it to me, should I buy it.
Thanks for any help you can provide me. Also any suggestions if you have any, if this converter won’t work.
Tablet-Assuming what brand is it?
We have run PC with HDMI and on we could extract audio from HDMI without the HDTV ON.
But some DVD players, the monitors need to be on.
Our return is 30 days if you want to try it.
Thanks for the quick response. It’s a Samsung Galaxy 10.1. It has a media tab with an HDMI output, and it also has a 3.5mm jack but you can only use one or the other. I’ve tested this already.
So it sounds like I'm on the right track. Maybe this latest converter is the one. This was one of the original converters I was looking at. I should've just gotten in then. Oh well. It does however have an HDMI out on it, so that would still leave me with getting the new monitors, which I'm fine with. I'd have to go from this to a HDMI splitter and then to the screens!
Now then, about this backlight business. What or how could you do that? I'd have to go into the brain itself and rewire the lights on a switch correct? Not sure I understand that.
By the way I emailed Derrick and he responded with costs for the screens. It's 279.00 shipped for 2 non touch screens, 2 HDMI boards, MP3car.com discount, and no adapters cause of the car application. I think that's pretty damn good considering that the screens I have I bought for 350.00 each! I'll sell those bad boys and pay for this!
I've emailed him also asking him about the backlight thing, as well as suggested maybe an HDMI in and an out port as well so people, like me, could avoid a splitter and adding one more thing to the system.
I'm ordering the Octava converter today I think! I'll wait and see what they email me back with. Getting closer folks! I'm starting to get excited again!
HERE! This will give me both screen HDMI outputs, and audio! WOOOO!!
Edit: Ok I'm reading the instructions on it and with this one, vs the first one I posted, it has a power/standby button. I've emailed them about it. My concern is, if I were to get this one and it works, then when I hook it up in the car, am I going to have to push the power button every time or will it go on automatically. You know how some units will automatically turn on when you plug them in.
Would that be something that the DC-DC converter would handle, like a not on but always powered type of thing? Or would I probably need to hard wire the power button?
Also am I going to need to look into a different DC-DC for this and the two monitors now? These are the things that I'm hung up on right now.
Edit #2: I stand corrected, the other unit has it also. So either way this is going to be an issue to figure out.
Edit #3: Both units have a standby mode, I'll find out more about. But that would turn it off or cause it to sleep essentially. I wonder how much power it draws when in sleep mode?
Ok HUGE news from Octava! They say that the unit will power on automatically when power is run to it. So if I were to put it on a switched power, then once it got power it would power on automatically. Like plugging it into the wall. When I plug it in, it powers automatically. I don't have to "turn it on". I'm going to go ahead and order one today. I'll get that in and get it on the bench. In the meantime I'll get some money made, get the pioneer screens up for sale and then get the new screens! This thing is gonna work DAMN IT!!
Ok, just got notice that the converter shipped! Should have it tuesday or wednesday.
I also posted my old screens up for sale. As soon as those get sold, I'll be buying the new screens.
Erm...what would you do if I tell you can buy two more Samsung 10" Galaxy tabs (refurbs) for $279.00 each? :-)
You'd just need a remote I guess. Remember, kids grow fast...LOL. I'm thinking about getting one for me. Thing is, people are saying there's a known issue with those big tabs...(link). Tiger Direct will give 30 days, now sure what Samsung would do on top of that, maybe 3mo?
