Samsung Galaxy 10.1 custom Civic install, Actual Build Started on Page 18

I have some questions for some folks. I've been researching this all day and I'm just not finding some solutions.

What I wan to do is what everyone else wants, tablet in the car. But I don't want a stand alone thing, I'm gonna do a custom in dash slide in tablet. I originally was going to go with the Ipad2 install but I don't really want to do what everyone else is doing. Besides that I have T-Mobile for a carrier and I'm getting the Samsung Galaxy S in the next month or so. If I get the Ipad2 it's my understanding I won't be able to use the apps on the phone through the tether on the Ipad2. Maybe I'm mistaken, this tablet stuff is all new to me and I'm trying to learn.

Here's what I want. I have an external processor, Audison Bit One. I'm taking out my OEM head unit, and in it's place I'll be using the tablet. I also have kids so I want rear head rest monitors. So I need to be able to get video from the tablet to the screens.

I've figured out how to do this all with the Ipad2. What I want is the Samsung Galaxy 10.1, and to be able to do it all with that. I'm not seeing a solution to any of this for that tablet yet.

With the Ipad2 I can bypass the internal DAC of the Ipad with an iStreamer. It will convert the usb signal with the iPad connector and turn it to a higher quality analog signal. But I don't know if I can use this for the Galaxy as well. If I can, then it solves part of my issues. I have that part down. But it's more the video part of it that will be an issue.

So can anyone help me out here with some suggestions on what I can do to get a video signal from the Galaxy to the monitors?

Ok so I think I might have found a way around the video out issues. I'm going to run through my idea for the set up using links etc. so try to follow along. Hopefully you guys can help me with if this will or will not work.

Ok so using the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tablet I'm wanting to do the custom in dash set up. I'll do this with fiberglass and the Galaxy 10.1 Tab Multi-Media Dock and integrate it into the fiberglass pan. I don't know what the internals of this docking station looks like but I have to think, if you look at the gallery, that all the internal parts (i.e. boards etc) are residing in the box in the back. If that's the case, no pun intended, then I'll hack it out and mold it into the fiberglass pan.

From there to get my signal I'll utilize the Galaxy Tab Adapter (HDTV) for the output. This adapter has an HDMI output on the end of it, and if you go into the gallery in the link and zoom in, you'll see on the second picture it has a second port out for the 30 pin connector. I'll get to that in a moment.

From the HDMI output I'll need to break that signal up and turn it into a composite signal (RCA's R/L and Video). I can do this with this a module/converter I think. This is the converter I found called the Monoprice HDMI to VGA & R/L Stereo Audio Converter. I can get a universal car charger and hard wire it to power it up.

Out of the HDMI converter I can use the audio outputs L/R and run those to the Bit One Processor. For the video I'd use a VGA to S-Video/RCA (Composite) Adapter Cable and run a video cable from the RCA (yellow) to the head rest monitors. To get the audio to the head rest monitors for the IR headphones I can use a 3.5mm Stereo Male To 2X RCA Female Adapter out of the 3.5mm jack in the dock and run RCA's to the monitors audio inputs.

Back at the Galaxy Tab Adapter. I was talking about a second 30 pin port. This port will house the Galaxy Tab™ 30-pin Vehicle Power Adapter with Detachable Cable. The charger, again, will be hard wired to an ignition source so it's not an always on thing and that will take care of charging the Galaxy.

I think that about covers everything! I know it's alot to hook up, but honestly it's ok with me, as long as I get the end result I'm looking for which is a good audio signal to the bit one processor, and video out to the head rest monitors.

So can anyone out there tell me if they think this will work or not. And if not, can you please help me to understand why it wouldn't work please? Thanks! I'm very excited if this is going to work cause this will put me one step closer to starting this project!

Sounds like a good plan, but it's hard to know if it will actually work. I wonder if using HDMI out will block the 3.5mm sound output? Will plugging the car charger turn the tablet into some car mode that would turn the hdmi out off? I doubt it, but it would be great if you could ask around at galaxy tab forums.

Even if it all works, one good thing about headrest screens with entertainment for the kids is that YOU do not get to listen to it. If you get rid of your OEM radio and what not, and if the kids want to listen to Justin Bieber all the time, I guess you'd have to listen to that too...because the Galaxy tab, or any tablet that I know off, won't support two zones, one for you, one for the kids.

If that's okay with you, fine, just wanted to warn you about that. What I did, was to use either a tablet or a carputer at the front, with two used android tablets for the kids in the back. Works great for me.

Yea ya know I'm not so concerned about that the more I think about it. I don't think I need those IR headphones. I'm not going to have the dual zone ability anyway so the headphones would be kind of a waste. Or i can split off the RCA signal and send part of it to the processor and part of it to the head rests. I'll have to think about that one.

The other thing I guess I could do is integrate a dvd player and just have that going for them. But I think the tablet with the netflix on it is the way to go and will probably be the most used. The only way I could get a dual zone on it would be to go to a separate dvd player and have it only play audio to the headrest monitors and then via the IR headphones. Something else to think about I guess.

Or a second tablet! No let's not get crazy! I was actually thinking a galaxy 7" and put it in the glove box, but that would be way overkill I think just for the kids to have movies. Ok moving on!

What was the VGA converter thing you got for yours? Would it be better than the one with the cable that I posted above? I just want the best signal to come across. If it's better then I'll think about getting it.

I think you are going about it the wrong way ( especially if you are looking for better SQ )
As far as I know galaxy tab 10.1 got usb-host working
Also , the Bit One has Optical input , why not utilize it?

If the usb-host is working properly and got ALSA drivers implemented
then all you need is an USB to SPDIF according to your budget
or an USB DAC if you insist on analog output ( I'm using Fiio E7 + L7 )

What kind of quality do you think you will get from a 30$ converter that is not even meant for audio only? what's the dac chip in the unit?
I'm guessing it won't be much improvement over the internal dac which is Wolfson WM8994E

go for whatever seems cheaper and simpler..

Well that's why I posted on here, to get some suggestions and ideas. I'm new to the whole tablet thing, but i love the idea of it in the car. So let me see I can figure this out. I'm not a computer guy by any stretch of the imagination. As far as my SQ goes, of course I want the best I can get, but at the same time I'm not sure I'm even going to compete in SQ competitions. Be that as it may, I want to sound as good as I can, with what I want, and be ready "just in case" I do decide to compete.

So first off, yes the Bit One has an optical input, but you must run an analog signal to set up the bit one before you can go to the optical signal. So that being that, I must have analog either way.

Second, I'm looking up USB-Host now, cause I don't understand what that even is. Ok I see what it is for the most part.

I can understand what you're saying about the USB to SPDIF. But that only provides me the optical or coax digital signal. I'm then still left with needing an analog signal for set up, and as well the video signal for monitors. So with the USB to SPDIF, I found the Bravo USB to SPDIF Converter Is this a good one? So I would go from usb to this correct?

So then along the same lines with the analog could I use Fubar II MkII USB Audio DAC along side the USB to SPDIF converter? So one then runs the analog signal I NEED for the bit one set up, and the other runs the optical signal. I know it's a little price just for the analog signal but it's necessary and if I can get the best possible signal going in, then I'm fine with paying the money.

Then for video I'm back to the HDMI set up, and converting that as well. Whew this is a lot of converting! This can't possibly work for all of it. Anyway, I'd go from the Galaxy Tab Adapter (HDMI) to an HDMI to VGA converter as I said and get my video feed from there.

So to hook those two up, via usb cables, and charge the tablet, I'll need 3 usb ports. So I can go from the 30 pin to usb adapter from the media adapter to the multi port something or other, I'll look into that, and then from the ports to everything else.

Have I botched up the whole thing? Lot of work, lot of modules!

Ok so how bout this. I'm trying to understand what you're talking about.

First, I need to have an analog signal to the Bit One, just to set it up. After that I can utilize an optical or coax digital signal. So what about this.

Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tablet with the Samsung Tab Adapter (HDTV). Then out of the HDMI port of the adapter, I go into this Atlona HDMI/DVI to Composite and S-Video Down-Converter. From there I can get my video signal, my analog audio signal to the bit one, my analog audio signal to the monitors for the headphones if I want (I think I can use both audio signals off that module). If I want to go as far as optical, I could use the usb signal into a Bravo USB to SPDIF converter, and out with a toslink into the Bit One for optical. I would need a usb hub I think. I have the 30 Pin connector on the Galaxy Tab Adapter that goes into usb, then I need a charger for the tablet using usb.

Or can I get the coax digital signal out of the Atlona converter as well? Then I wouldn't need the Bravo. The Atlona is retailed at $299.99. The Bravo is retailed at $187.00. If I need both that's a total of round $487.00.

The other option that I'm thinking of, I'm not sure it'll work cause I'm just not great at this stuff, is to use a usb hub like this, which I'm assuming would power the usb cable going to the tablet and eliminating the charger portion, then connecting this Fubar II MkII USB Audio DAC giving me my analog signal, and then Bravo USB to SPDIF converter giving me my optical signal. For the video I'm still a little stumped, but I found this Portta LXHCS which should do the trick, at least for the video feed and audio feed to the monitors for picture and the headphones.

For this option, the Bravo is $187.00, the Fubar II is $167.00, the Portta is about $43.00, and the usb hub is $78.00. That's a total of $475.00

So not that big a difference, providing they would work. Obviously the less modules the better, as far as I'm concerned, but I can make it all fit if need be. I would still need a way to do charging somehow via 12v, for everything including the tablet.

Can you comment on these? This is why I posted on here so I can get some knowledgeable feedback on my application. Thanks for your suggestions. It's appreciated.

First I don't have any pictures as I haven't installed my tablet yet , I have some coding to do ( Look a couple of threads down )

What you need is to first check if the usb-host is even enabled for audio output on the galaxy ( Try searching or ask @xda-developers )
Next , go to head-fi.org forums and do your research on usb-spdif converters - the expensive ones are not always better

For example , I chose an usb-dac cuz I use MS-8 and it only supports analog signal ( that's why I can't recommend any usb-spdif converter )
I decided on a budget of ~100$ for it and eventually chose Fiio E7 + L7 ( the L7 is just a line out dock to bypass the internal amp ) which got great reviews and beat a lot of its opponents even in higher price range..

It's the first time I'm hearing about needing the analog signal to setup the bit.1 , are you sure about this?
You must have analog input each time you turn on the processor? it sounds really weird for it to be true..

As for running HDMI out and USB-HOST with audio , you really need to check this one out
For example on the Nook when I use the usb dac my headphone out ( 3.5mm ) doesn't output any sound..
Come back with the info and we will figure out the best way to achieve what you want

And which usb hub costs 78$?? I use a ~5$ one..
