I suggest a one-piece alternator/regulator in case you have an old external type.
And then a 2-wire type (eg, S & L) so that the alternator can monitor the battery voltage direct irrespective of where it is mounted.
(I originally read your alternator fail as an alternator fall-out and immediately thanked alternator B+ insulated covers and modern vehicles for for their battery to alternator fusing!)

Ah, Oldspark, my friend! Haven't heard from you in ages! Of course, I haven't been here in ages, so that explains that. You just happened to reply as I was revisiting our conversations from about two years ago about the dual battery circuits. I'm considering a revisit of that topic later on after some other issues are addressed. Hopefully, these ideas will at least make it out of my head onto paper or sketches.

Ha Ha. I'm rarely on here except for dual/multi battery stuff, though the odd alternator or battery or even LED issue occasionally pops up.
I'm now essentially "power" only, not the original "mp3car-naive" poster I originally was.
The dual battery stuff hasn't change much, though I now refer to the alt-controlled relay as the UIBI. UIBI is "Ultimate Intelligence Battery Isolator" which is a take on "Smart Isolator" as used for some voltage sensing battery isolators. I got a bit sick of crap like "priority charging" and other things which were simply invented to cover-up essential behavior of voltage sensors. Priority charging indeed - it's a fracken essential time delay!
Not that I should get into that now. After you excel with Honors at College you can sit back and muse over my posts (which are as short as usual LOL!)
But I just realised I didn't mention the other advantage with the remote Sensing type alternator - that diodes can be used in the S-line to boost alternator output voltages by typically 0.3V upwards. Not that that should be required (nor recommended) for alternators delivering 14.2-14.4V at the battery....
Forgive me, forget all that and get back to those College kickers. (It's amazing how primitives resort to such physical tactics.)
In the meantime I may try to revisit some of our discussions. I suffered a huge data corruption a while ago (thanks to Microsoft's >138G disk scrambling bug) and haven't bothered locating my previous backup nor searching the disk for key segments. But my new 3rd-gen i5 and windoze 7 is a bit faster than my P4 2.4G Windows 2000 and it doesn't have that same bug that even W2k SP4 and XP SP2 had.
Anyhow, I should be ready for you next millennium.

So... My bad luck continues. This truck is in the scrapyard. Transmission went out over winter break and would have cost more than the truck was worth. I now have a Kia Rio, but my financial situation is horrid right now, so I won't be doing much outside of a few mods with stuff I already have. Unfortunately, one of those isn't the car computer.
My mom ended up in the hospital with a severe case of pneumonia, so I missed a week of classes to go take care of her. That not only drained me, but it also put me in the hole financially and with my classes. Midterms are this week, and I'm fkd. I'll try to drop in and update, but I really have nothing unless you enjoy hearing me complain... ^

Nah - it's still great having the update (even when nothing has progressed - it lets others know).
It's just bad hearing the crap news.
Though it IMO never helps to hear "yeah, we've all been thru that" (like wtf - how tf does that help - other than MAYBE give confidence or add strength that you will get thru it? Farrrkk!), does it help to say bad things often come in threes?
That's might be great for thrillseekers, or useful to brace victims for what yet's to come. (Or get their mind of the other 2.)

All I can say is the truck's gone, but your ideas and work etc can be transferred. And let's face it, after all this study etc, you can get another or whatever you want. (That's the cream for all this sacrifice aka investment.)
Sickness is a real poo at anytime, but when it affects study...
I reckon plow on. Repeating the year or module/s is a likely option.
HOWEVER - if you are likely to fail the year, dropping out may be the best option. (That was my lesson. I continued (for the sake of learning) despite knowing I'd fail. Hence I failed that year and was out. If I had dropped out, I would not be a fail and hence would have been readmitted.)
But also, get advise from course sources etc.
And see their psychologists or whatever they offer. That's not necessarily to help you per se, it's just to show them you had concerns and problems and did all you could... (They like that!)
Now tell me you replied only to get me off the hook re dual batteries etc?

Yet another ****ey update.
I did the withdraw without prejudice. This last semester never happened (except to the school's bankroll...) I will be going back in the fall and trying again. Right now, I am back at my mom's, jobless, and soon-to-be "homeless." Also, the Kia's clutch went out when I came home for spring break, and the cheapest I could have it fix was $1500. I ended up trading it to my dad's landlord's brother-in-law for a 1999 Chevy Cavalier. (Mechanically, it's sound. I just need to replace the breaks, get new tires, and replace the ignition switch (stupid TheftLoc))....
My father got a bright idea to get a motorhome for me. I'm still skeptical about it being a viable long-term living solution, but it /will/ give me something to toy with in the meantime. It has a lot of space in the cab, and most of the wiring is either drawn up, or easy to access and trace. There are some aftermarket toggles in the cab I need to trace (hopefully one is the AUX battery switch). I'm thinking about going to town on it and doing a Bluetooth audio system inside and out in addition to resurrecting my old Atom and seeing if I can't find my GPS puck and everything else from the Tercel install.
