I have decided to go fully wireless, mostly inspired by your video, so thanks for that. I know it will have a few quirks here end there, but I will try anyway.

I have bought a Samsung Allshare Cast dongle to transmit video over wifi, and a bluetooth hands-free to transmit sound, my arduino device will take care of controlling the smartphone over bluetooth through the dash screen.

Waiting for things to arrive, I'm anxious!
I would probably take the Netgear PTV-3000 over the Samsung one. The PTV is a little smaller and gets more frequent updates. It can also be used by non Samsung phones in the future that implement Miracast.

I looked for it everywhere in Europe but it seems it's not for sale over here. Even the Samsung was very difficult to find.

My order is in hold and not shipping because I also ordered a simple hdmi to dvi converter wich seems is not in stock
That sucks, I hope it arrives before the weekend.

Yes the allshare dongle does audio also. But then i will need to install an amp in the car and split the audio/video from the hdmi and also install the hands free anyway to do voice calls.
I prefer to install only a Parrot mki9000 hands free, wich includes a decent mini amp ( at least for me, I don't need thousands of kw of amplification ) and i can give voice commands and do voice calls through the hands free mic, plus i will have physical controls for volume up/down and next/previous track.
For me it's the perfect solution, now I hope everything works ok without too much lag.

    Allshare Cast is working great!

Now if i can find my soldering iron i will install evrything in the car.

Here is a video of the test rig, the galaxy s3 has no wires connected at all:

This is amazing! Can you please explain how this works? I understand your using allshare cast to display the video but how do you use the arduino to control the touch events?

Have you considered using heated acetone vapor on your printed bezel to smooth it out? You can get some pretty excellent results:
