Hello guys, here is my take on carpc building.
"3D build" is not only a 'catchy' name for the thread, i am going to use a lot of "3D techniques" during this build, like 3D scanning, 3d modelling and 3d printing .
Actually i have a lot of work done, but need time to take photos and write posts.
This is the stock celica console:
I decided to not integrate the lcd in the 2 din opening because it is too low and looking at the screen would be dangerous, i am going to do it in the upper cubby where the small door is.
First, I 3D scanned the console with a home built 3d laser scanner, this is the outcome:
It's not great but enough for my purposes.
Then, using this scan as the base i 3d modelled a bezel for the screen, this is the result:
Next step is 3d print the bezel (!), but this will be in the next post

My 3D printer is a RapMan, it's a hobbyist grade "build yourself" machine, it comes in a kit and you have to assemble it, i think it was around 1900$ when i bought it a while ago. The printed objects are not great but okay for a quick prototype.
The piece took 12 hours to be printed, it's a bit rough, once i decide i'm happy with everything i will print a higher quality piece (it will take much more time to print) or i will send it to a professional printing service.
This is the printed bezel mounted in the console.
I also designed and printed some pieces to attach the screen to the bezel
Now i have to trim the dash a bit to make room for the screen, but this will be in the next post.
That's awesome. I've been debating going for a 3d printer for a variety of projects, including for my carpc. Really cool to see someone actually do it. Great work with the modeling, I'd be interested to see some high resolution photos when you print it out at a much higher quality.

IMO a 3d printer is totally worth the money,this hobby grade printers require lots of maintenance but still it's worth it.
I will post pictures, i will probably send it to a professional printing service and have it done in shiny black ABS plastic
I'm going for an Android install, I'm going to use a phone instead of a tablet. Mainly because a phone has FM Radio and is much smaller than a tablet.
I will output video to the transflective screen, still i don't know if i will do it wirelessly or wired.
The main problem with this setup is how to control the phone or tablet with the tft touchscreen in the dash.
For this purpose i have built a device using an Arduino and a Bluesmirf HID bluetooth module.
What this device does is read the touches on the dash screen and send it over bluetooth to the smartphone/tablet, it's the same as the commercial device called 'MimicsX2'. (you can google it to see how it works).
Well I have this device almost ready, I just need to fine tune it. Here's a vid of the test rig:
Next step is to decide how to send smartphone video to the screen, wired or wirelessly, and buy apropiate equipment.

I have the wireless video on android through allshare. I have tasker setup to auto launch the service. It is a little clunky but works okay. The problem I am having is I am using the LCD controller fron this thread: -display/147249-transflective-lcd-panel-with-res-touch-controler-for-101-36-s-h.html and there is an overscan issue I cannot get fixed on the LCD. The display output doesn't quite fit the screen. I fixed this issue testing on a tv setting the aspect ration to Auto from 16:9. Unfortunately that didnt fix it on the 7" lcd. So for now I am going to use a MHL adapter on my Note 2.
I have decided to go fully wireless, mostly inspired by your video, so thanks for that. I know it will have a few quirks here end there, but I will try anyway.
I have bought a Samsung Allshare Cast dongle to transmit video over wifi, and a bluetooth hands-free to transmit sound, my arduino device will take care of controlling the smartphone over bluetooth through the dash screen.
Waiting for things to arrive, I'm anxious!
