I'm gonna check some of these bands out. I've recently been getting into European power metal (Dark Moor) and melodic death metal (Children of Bodom). Maybe it's time to try some gothic metal.

If you like Children of Bodom "Angels Don't Kill, you will like Crematory, and be sure to check out Theatre of Tragedy's Hide and Seek. You can't' go wrong with Tristania, Sirenia, Sins of Thy Beloved, earlier Within Temptation "Enter", Amorphis, Em Sinfonia, or Darkseed.

    Music hijack... lol

I'll add Siebenburgen, Before The Dawn and for a few melodic ones check out Amaranthe, Kamelot and an oddity in the Black Sabbath collection called "tyr".

We should start a "best metal thread"...

Wow, it's amazing you guys listen to the same type of music I do. Very few of my friends like this kind of music. Awesome.

Well back to the install, I got the dash cut to fit the wiring, but after test fitting good, something terrible happened. The carputer would not boot. The screen stayed black.

So I opened it up and disconnected the HD Radio, as it draws the most current, but still no go. Then I unplugged all the USB devices and it booted. Once in windows I started plugging in all the USB devices (6 internal) and everything was still working, so I played some music, and the volume level was only half?

Next I notices a whisp of smoke coming out the power supply side to I pulled the power cable immediately.

I disassembled everything, and inspected each board carefully with an optivisor, and could not find anything that looked burnt. So I pulled the heat sink off the CPU and noticed the heat sink compound was dry. It's a flip chip under the heatsink, where bare silicon touches the heat sink, loosley held in place by spring loaded clips, and it's able to wobble too easily. So I cleaned the dry heat sink compound off, being very careful not to touch the silicon with my finger. (Sodium from your fingerprint will decay hot silicon in very short order as I learned from 34 years in the semiconductor manufacture business) I applied some Artic Silver, and re-attached the heat sink.

So I power it up and so far, so good. Install USB devices one at a time, then reboot, and at the last one he boot hands at BIOS with an EB code on the intel splash screen. It's the ODAC! NO! Not my precious ODAC!

I unplugged the ODAC and everything boots fine, so I reboot, and measure USB voltage at 4.99v all the way into the Driveline front end. Next I plug in the ODAC, and all is good, and the music is playing out the ODAC. I measure voltage, and it's at 4.97V. I reboot, leaving the ODAC connected, and measuring the voltage at 4.97V, but it hangs at the intel splash screen with an EB code again.

So, for some reason I cannot use the ODAC connected before boot. The next test I am going to do is connect the transmit and receive lines of the ODAC USB to the motherboard headers, but connect an outboard USB power supply. The ODAC is supposed to only draw 50ma, so confidence is not high, but I have aquired a 2 amp 12v to 5v converter that outputs 5.17v unloaded. Will test tonight after work.

It's funny how one problem leads to another, isn't it?

I would play around with some of the USB settings in the BIOS. You can probably disable anything related to booting from USB. And maybe legacy USB support. There maybe even be a BIOS update available.

I glanced at this page of intel motherboard post-codes:
    http://www.intel.com/support/motherb.../cs-025434.htm

Some searching about this problem seemed to indicate that disabling unused USB ports may help. Heck, just try a different port.

Does your motherboard/bios have any options regarding powering the USB when the PC is off?

It gives code 58 right after unplugging the ODAC then more codes but too fast to read, then boots windows.

Code 58 is reset USB bus, so It's definetly a USB issue.

I have fast boot enabled which has a USB setting but I I also have USB as my first boot device, so I'll try those settings tonight.

Some of those codes are supposed to be there, just to tell you what step of the BIOS initialization is being performed. Code 58 (reset USB) sounds like just a normal part of the BIOS initialization. I would only worry about the code that it hangs on.

Have you tried swapping the USB cable to the ODAC? I have seen some weird issues with damaged USB cables in the past.

Well, Good news, I finally solved the ODAC issue.

First I tried a known working cable... the one from the JoyCon steering wheel controller, but no fix.

Next I tried an outboard 5v power supply connected to the ODAC's USB Power in, and left the transmit and receive wires connected to the motherboard's USB header. After a sucessfull first boot, then playing music for several minutes, and a delay with EB code before continuing boot the second time, I had failure on the third boot.

So I was about to concede defeat, when I decided to try connecting the ODAC to one of the rear panel USB ports that support high current devices, and I was able to reboot 5 times in a row without hanging, even after warming up the computer playing music for an hour.

I cannot explain why, other than the NM10 chipset just don't like the ODAC on an internal header. Well time will tell. Now I just have to re-assemble the box and install it this weekend.
