So I just plunked down scratch for a new (to me) truck. Its a early 99 Super Duty f350 4x4 Crew Cab longbed. It's a 7.3l diesel, the biggest (and widely considered most indestructable) diesel ford made for the pickup truck world. Its also a 6 speed manual, which is pretty rare to find in these trucks, let alone a crew cab. Overall I'm really stoked on the purchase, I've been truck shopping for several months now.
I plan to make this into the ultimate worktruck/geek lair. I literally only got it a few hours ago and I'm already planning out the pc, sad right? ;p
As for what hardware I'll end up using, I'm still completely on the drawing board. I may hack apart a laptop I have sitting around, or I might go for something more extravagent, we'll see what budget allows.
For now I'm more interested in getting the truck up to 100% mechanical condition. Then I plan to add some things to make getting around in the snow easier, like a winch and locking diffs. I'll also be doing some work with the suspension, but for now it will do.
The sound system is stock or less, the previous owner had a system in it of some sort, but it didn't come with the truck. The upside to that is its prewired for amps already. That will come when I can afford it, but again reliability is my first concern at the moment. I'm not a fan of huge bass or rattling down the road, I'd much rather have a modest system with amazing clarity.
Then I'll start working on the truckputer. In the meantime I might rock a laptop or something so I can start figuring out my usage and frontend needs.
I'll start keeping track of my ideas on this thread and note when they actually happen.
Basic performance and tuning mods
PTO hydraulic pump (tranny has PTO port built in, woot)
hyrdaulic air compressor
hydraulic motor to spin a salvaged 5000w generator inverter
-motor will also be able to power a rope tow for my backcountry snowboarding persuits
hydraulic dump bed
additional batteries (currently 2, I'd like to have at least 4)
Second or upgraded alternator. This truck is setup for 2 alternators already, just need to weigh my options
Auxillary fuel tank with in-cab switch and heat for WVO/Biodiesel
Interior upgrade, seats and dash if I can find some decent deals. I'd really like a complete king ranch interior if possible.
Front clip upgrade, I'd like to switch over to '05 lights and grill. Might do bumper too, might go for an off-road style bumper instead.
Off-road lights, fog lights, reverse lights, side work lights
Interior accent lighting
New rims and tires
Make the truck harder to break into (sheetmetal surrounds on door lock mechanisms)
Make the truck harder to steal
Possibly shave the door handles
Hidden cb/scanner/radar detector
Power rear window
Internet connectivity, wifi repeating
OBD diagnostic/tuning integration
Tire pressure monitoring system
Bluetooth integration/hands free dialing/texting
Accessory control through a sea of relays
-I don't want a lot of switch clutter for all the truck upgrades, so I'll be doing most of my switching with a microcontroller and a ton of relays hooked up to the computer
-This will extend me the ability to toggle any switches from inside the cab or anywhere from which I can ping it
Backup and blindspot cameras
Climate control integration (hopefully to delete analog knobs all together, but we'll see)
Custom stickshift knob input device
Home automation integration
Homebrew alarm system
probably arduino based for power reasons, but heavily integrated with the pc
will be able to stop and start the truck
turn on/off high-idle mode for warm-up
adjust climate control
keyless entry via handheld device or rfid/biometric input
mobile network paging of alarm events and status updates
train-horns for siren
turbo timer for proper cooldown before engine shutdown
gps breadcrumbs in case of theft
various shunt methods for preventing unauthorized startup
biometric checks (doubles as ability to save preferences for multiple drivers)
ir curtain and/or motion detection in interior and bed
Thats all for now, its late, Ill edit in more tomorrow and post some pics of the truck.
Edit: pics are up
Good Luck in your adventure! I see a nick-name change in the near future. My suggestion would be SuperStroker. SNO
Naw, Sierra refers to the mountain range I'm from. You'll see in a minute when I take some pics =)
My mistake, I thought you had a sierra truck and you were going from the darkside to a ford truck. Looking forward to the pics. SNO
Very interesting. Looking forward to pics

So I spent most of the day today messing with my Kindle, struggling to get drivers working, flashing various bootloaders and roms. For a minute I even thought I'd bricked it, but managed to get it working again. After many hours of reading and struggling for a solution, finally I got it to boot without hanging.
Jellybean up and running! Goodbye crippled Amazon OS.
Nice to see another Super Duty build here, I'll be following your progress. I had a 99.5 SD back then which I ordered and waited for. Longest 8 weeks of my life. The PS badges are gone on yours so I can't tell if it's an early or late 99, the early ones sounded great with the louder turbo. Good luck with the build.
Thanks for stopping in, I saw your work log and you did a really nice job. I can only hope mine comes out nearly as well. Its an early 99 btw and the turbo is new and quite pleasing to the ear and right foot.
