2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara 7" Android Tablet Install
I've been a 'viewer' on this forum for almost a week now, and found so much inspiration. Now i wanted to do my own project, and i'll share my process here with you guys.. :-)
Special thanks to the forum user "SDB_FTW", got alot of inspiration from he's Corvette thread.
So, i got a Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006, which i bougth about 6 months ago. I'm very happy with the car, but the radio that came with it, doesnt have the great look that i want.
After a few weeks, i ordered a radio from China, which has most of the normal functions, such as radio, GPS navigation, dvd, bluetooth, touch screen etc
But after i came over this forum, and saw all the cool Android Tablet installs, i got so much inspiration that i want to do the same thing myself..
I bougth the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" at work, and started to do more research about Android. This is my first Android device, so it's a bit new for me to get my head around, but so far i like it alot.
I wasnt sure if i was going for the iPad Mini or the 7" Android, but, for this use, it looks like the Android will be the best option, and the iPad Mini is a bit larger (taller), than the 7" Samsung, so it wouldnt fit properly.
Also the widgets on the Android is very usefull, and it doesnt really matter if it drain alot of power, since it will stay connected at all times anyway.
I also bougth a Double Din frame, that is about the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2
My plan is to have the tablet mounted behind the double din frame, with a good OEM look. My goal for this project is to have it as perfect as possible.
One thing that i noticed, was the Samsung logo on the tablet..
The logo itself is fine, but doesnt look that good in landscape, so i did abit of research to find a way to remove it. Sadly theres no good way to remove it.
The only option i found is by replacing the glass. It cost about $50 on ebay, so im not sure what im going to do. Its not that important atm anyway. maybe later when i get everything else done.
I also bougth a OBD II Bluetooth adapter from ebay, that i can connect to my car, and with the Torque Pro for Android, i can see all the information that i need from the head of my car. Very usefull app.
I still got very much left to do, but heres a few photos of how it will look like;
As you can see, the Galaxy Tab barley fits behind the double din frame. Also need to make sure that i can use the charger plug on the side of the tablet..
The charger plug is kinda big;
After some research on how to get a smaller plug, i saw how SDB_FTW did it in his install, so the steps from there was pretty easy.
What he did was to disassemble a Samsung Universal Docking unit, and take out the charger inside. I was lucky enough to find the same unit as him and did the same thing..
As you can see, it barley take up any space on the sides.
It also got a Audio output on the card, so i don't need to use the other one on the tablet..atleast not for now.
The difficult part is to be able to mount the tablet to the double din frame, heres what i got now:
I'll see what i do from here..atleast thats how far i am.
I'll be updating this post as soon as i got more things to show. Thanks :)
