thanks - it's funny, i've actually left things in the same place now for so long that my hand just reaches for them by memory more than i need to look.

i've been longing for a newer faster tablet lately, but i really can't justify it. this one works fine for the majority of what i do (stream pandora and use topo maps). besides, i'd want one with something with BT 4.0 LE, a newer chipset that supports neon, hdmi output, micro sd, usb & charging at the same time and something with some decent community rom support - i don't think there is such a thing on verizon, so i'd have to pay for a wifi hotspot device which costs more per month than a tablet, or tether my phone which i don't really like the idea of either.

i'd actually rather run a windows 8 pro tablet, but the mobile apps for win 8 are still really limited. i just checked the other day and couldn't find a single good looking topo mapping program on the win 8 app store.

the Bluetooth redo of the Android Steering Wheel Interface app is now up, the new project is called Car Bus Interface: https://github.com/theksmith/CarBusInterface

    the quote the README:
The primary use case is for those with an Android based tablet acting as a carputer who wish to have their steering wheel mounted factory stereo buttons control the Android device (adjust volume, change media tracks, etc). However, you could have the Android device respond to any message that is broadcast on the vehicle's bus - from a window rolling down to having reached engine operating temperature.

kind of, i implemented something that looks for long versus short presses based on how many repeats over a time period it sees the pressed msg. however on the WJ, when the button is down it doesn't send the pressed msg really often, so it actually worked more consistently to respond to a quick double press instead of a long press. you can now easily have a single press do one thing and a double tap do something else. you can try to dial it in for a long press in the settings without editing source code if you wanted to tinker.

i didn't try to use what you mentioned about watching for the idle msg... i don't think that would work any better than what i have as it looked like that idle msg was pretty spaced out just as much as the repeated down state msg.

overall this version is WAY more flexible, i even put together a little wiki on github to act as a user manual: https://github.com/theksmith/CarBusI.../wiki/Settings

if there are any ham radio geeks out there - i'm now running APRS thanks to the tablet setup and an inexpensive bluetooth TNC.

    details here: http://theksmith.com/adventures-outd...let-aprsdroid/

everyone else wondering wtf APRS is, here's the wikipedia entry... or this map pretty much sums up what most people do with it: http://aprs.fi/

Nice write up. I haven't been into APRS, I spend most of my time down on the HF bands but I can see how this would be great when out on a trail. Not a bad price for the TNC and it's nice and compact.

cool, i'm still a tech class. i honestly haven't really been into the ham thing much since getting my license other than as a replacement for CB (2m simplex and occasional repeater usage). but suddenly i'm finding myself more interested in RF lately. i actually have one of those cheap usb SDR sticks coming this week and have already been looking at down and up-converters!

i'm thinking about asking for a new tablet (or $ towards one anyway) for christmas. looking at the Sony Xperia Z2 at Verizon. i've been going back and forth on whether to get a wifi only tablet and a mobile hotspot or stick with a cellular tablet. the hotspot is $20 a month instead of $10 on Verizon and then i have 2 devices to charge and carry whenever i want to use the tablet out of the Jeep, so despite it being less hackable i think i'm sticking with a carrier tablet.

currently the Jeep is down, the entire front axle is nearly split in half

Ouch sorry to hear that. I was thinking of using a cellular tablet as well. I ended up using a WiFi tablet with a hotspot that stays in the car. This worked out well for my installation since I have tablets in the back too.

got the axle fixed and put it all back in, then had some nice camping and wheeling near Tucson this weekend...

i put Napoleon Dynamite on the projector system and another guy happened to have a bag of popcorn handy. everyone seemed to really have a good time - we kept forgetting to put logs on the fire as we all got into the movie then we'd get cold and be like "oh yeah, i'm sitting outside!"
