finished strengthening and painting the mounting brackets, and widened my CB & Ham mic mounts.
still having some issues with the audio, but it works ok for now. have a potential solution for that, which i'll experiment with next week.
this weekend the system gets it's first real test on the Old Dale trip...

the audio wasn't loud enough, but i knew that was still a problem going in. i worked on that a bit today and i think i'm getting it closer to being dialed in.
i used Copilot Live just a bit to test it out, but since I had 4G most of the freeway part of the trip, i just used Google Maps (seeing traffic ahead of time is great!). Backcountry Navigator worked very well during the off-highway portion of the trip. the recently beefed up mount was perfect - solid as a rock through all the whoops, ditches, and rock-strewn-washes. the Tasker profiles i setup for when the Jeep was on/off worked as expected too. having 10" of a map screen is friggen fantastic, i can reach this thing easier than the previous touchscreen, and it works in direct sunlight a million times better - i can't believe i didn't do this project sooner!
ok, the audio is fixed. i guess i was right that the factory Infinity amp just needed to be driven much harder on the inputs.

it's kind of a messy solution - i'm still using the JL audio line driver to get rid of any noise and up the weak signal from the bluetooth, then that feeds into this Lepai amp, and then that feeds the factory Infinity amp. it sounds at least as good, probably a little better than the original factory radio & amp combo.
i'd like to eventually just get a nice aftermarket amp to replace the lepai and infinity setup, but then i want new speakers at the same time and i just didn't want to get into all that right now, so this works.
that leaves the steering wheel controls as the main todo... woo hoo! getting closer to "finished"!

worked on learning some things with the Android SDK today so i can get those pesky steering wheel controls working soon.
i can now successfully connect to the OBDII reader, issue AT commands, and receive the results from my test app. i still need to learn how to make the app a background service and also decide if i will try to directly control things from the service or integrate it as a Tasker plugin so that it's easy to change the button behaviors. also need to determine how resource usage will be if i leave the serial connection open all the time or if i should just poll extremely often.
That looks really nice. I love my Xoom tablet.

Very nice build, gave me some great ideas. And from one jeeper to another, sweet WJ! I'm in the midst of a very similar project: arduino talking to canbus, and an Android service to talk to the arduino. Fun stuff!
