I had a few beers tonight and started thinking...

The lower two radios are short. The carputer box can go under them. I plan on putting a fairly large touch screen monitor above them. At least two of the radios are computer controllable. One might get swapped out for something a bit more modern at some point in time to add packet radio capability.

I am going to weld together a mounting bracket for the whole thing and then make a console (probably wood) that will drop over it to make it look nice.

In case someone wonders, from top to bottom...

    SSB CB Radio
    GRE Trunking Scanner
ADI Vhf ham radio (might get changed for something else)
ICOM VHF commercial radio with digital scrambler module

Winter has substantially slowed any progress down... lack of a garage, and 12 inches of snow outside right now... another 20 inches expected in the next 24 hours... only a month or so to go until spring... then things will pick up again.

Winter in snow climates does take the steam out of working on the vehicle. I can heat my garage quickly but it's still not the same. For a special project on a weekend, fine, but to heat it up for 2 or 3 hrs in the evening, it's just not that comfortable, the air temp climbs fast but the floor never warms up and the tools take a long time to warm up. I have spend most of the last 2 months working on the software on my PC via team viewer from inside the house. The truck sits in the cold garage connected to all the correct peripherals in the vehicle and connected to WiFi, and I'm nice and comfortable inside. I just leave a battery charger on it. Worked out great.

I look forward as spring approaches to following your progress!!

I was just thinking about this build the other day. I didn't realize your location but that certainly is a reason to hold off. Look forward to spring to see how you progress.

Hey Rickk, any progress here?? I don't think those radios are going to install themselves.

    Getting warmer...

CB antenna bracket is mounted on the driver side of the bed near the rear.

I made a bracket to mount the radios and the 'puter. Just gotta find time to put it in. Eventually there will be an aluminum diamond plate box that drops over the bracket to hide everything.

    Phil,

How do I remove the kick panels (door sill panels?) on either side to access the wire channels. Do they just pop in with clips? That is what I heard, but I am afraid to just start yanking on them.

Ya, about 5 spring clips, first one about an inch in on each end. I usually force my index and middle finger under one end and start lifting from there. As soon as possible slip a couple fingers under the inside edge about 3" down to ensure you don't fatigue the plastic on one end

Well, after many months of crappy weather and other commitments, I finally had a day that was devoted to this project.

I removed the crappy "mini-console", expecting to see nothing but a transmission hump. What I found was a metal box that apparently contains the air bag controller. At first I thought everything would start to suck, but then I realized that the mini-console was bolted to a very secure set of brackets that is welded to the transmission hump. I assume that even the really big console would have been bolted to these same brackets.

So, I set out to make some adapter brackets that would connect the factory brackets to my brackets (lots of brackets)...

    front adapter bracket...

    rear adapter bracket...

and finally, the main mounting bracket that everything will mount to...

Things weren't perfectly square, but some sheet rubber stuffed here and there is making everything OK.

Tomorrow I have more planned... maybe I will actually get somewhere by the end of tomorrow ;-)

BTW, in case there is any doubt, I have entered the portion called "winging it".

    Rick
