Thanks for the prompt reply. In your setup are you streaming the audio/music from Nexus 7 over bluetooth to the HU? Or are you using a USB DAC? How is the sound quality in both cases?
Could you please let me know?

I am very interested in this to. Are there newer models that don't need to hit this button to start the app? Has anyone looked at interfacing the arduino with a joycon or axxess steering controller? I have axxess now, and my buttons have a source button so I wonder if that would control the app starting. Truck is a 08 Silverado. I'm thinking about getting the deck just to see, because if the steering controls work to start the app this would be perfect.

I cannot really account for newer units, as I have only had the model listed in the first post. As far as controlling with an arduino, this was discussed previously in this thread, although not pertaining to steering wheel controls. What has been confrimed is the ability to send ir commands that will allow the head unit to go into app mode and more, which is really the basis for control.

In my setup I use bluetooth audio and it works fine. I imagine there would be a little more clarity if using a dac, but you have to remember that most of the control going on (Tablet, to head unit) is only possibly by connecting the tablet to the head unit over bluetooth. therefore using a dac to input the aux on the head unit is going to render the appremote aspect useless.

Does Bluetooth audio work on everything soundwise? Meaning can I be listening to radio, and Google maps cuts in for directions?

My thoughts on the setup is to use the aux 90% of the time and not to use the remote app interface. I would be able to swap to radio when I want, but I could use Google music and android apps in full function. If you were plugged in aux and turned off the vehicle does the radio come back on to the aux source?

If you have the source on BT AUDIO or BT PHONE, I think you get a different option (which means AppRemote won't activate). This is the biggest drawback of the Arduino solution: there's no real way to get output from the HU into the N7 as to which SOURCE the HU is currently on. The workaround to this is to set Tasker to cycle through the sources until you land on one that will go straight to the "SET APP REMOTE" option. So when the car is started, Tasker will open the UsbTerminal app and issue something like seven SOURCE commands. This is the equivalent to pressing the SOURCE button on the physical remote seven times. No matter what the SOURCE the HU is currently on, by "pressing" the SOURCE button seven times you will always land on a SOURCE that will take you directly to the "SET APP REMOTE" option. This allows us to keep the whole solution hands-free and automatic.
Any updates on this? I'm in the process of putting my install together, and I was thinking there must be a more elegant way to get the arduino to invoke app mode. Does anyone know if there is a discrete code to go straight to app mode? Also, being an arduino newb, is there a way to have the arduino send the ir commands directly without having usbterminal open?
