    CarPC in 93 Mercury Sable

    Hi,

I have finally decided to put a 'puter in my car. I don't want to do anything permanent to the car (not that I care about it much), I just don't want to waste anymore money on this thing on anything permanent.

As of right now, this is the hardware that I have and plan to use.

    1. Dell Latitude L400 (PIII 700MHz-M, 256MB SDRAM, 40GB HD, Port Replicator, External 8X DVD & Floppy)
    2. Deluo GPS Mouse (Thanks Chita79)

As of right now, that's all I have.

Right now, I'm looking for the best way to power it.

    I have 3 options:

    1. Auto/Air Adapter (Dell does not sell these for this model. It also has a proprietary connection on the back)
    2. Inverter
    3. An option I don't know about (Any ideas?)

I'm also looking for a 7" VGA TC (Lilliput or Xenarc)

I will post pictures of exactly what I will be doing in the car for the screen and computer as soon as I get the car cleaned up so I don't embarass myself by it's messieness

For now, I'm still using my Clie for Navigation and my iPod 20GB 4th GEn for MP3s.
So, enough chatting. Click here to visit my project

By the way, feel free to sign my guesbook and rate my car

Now, I am going to mount my CarPC (A laptop) under the passenger's seat. The only reason that I'm doing it under there is because I don't have enough room anywhere else. My subs don't give me enough room to put it in the trunk.

The laptop is a Dell Latitude L400. It has a PIII 700MHz-m, 20GB HD, 256MB Ram, and an 8xDVD.

Here are some pictures of the laptop:

Here is a picture of how the laptop is going to look mounted under the seat:

There are a couple of problems however with just putting the laptop down there on the carpet. The laptop gets REALLY hot, and there's an annoying heater/AC vent under the seat that will 1. Get in the way of securing the laptop to the carpet 2. Maybe make conditions down there unusable for the laptop.

Now, as far as my screen goes, I am going to make a little shelf for a Lilliput or Xenarc screen under my receiver where the pocket is. I'm still not sure what to make it from. It will probably end up being made of wood or metal. If someone has a better idea, please let me know. On that shelf I am going to screw the Lilliput/Xenarc stand on there so that I don't have to do any bondoing or fiberglassing. Plus, the screen is easily removable.
    Best of both worlds!!

If your friend's thing doesn't work out you can pick up one of the little laptop cooling stands with fans, etc. for under $20..

Well, I have looked into those. The problem is that they raise the laptop too high, and I can't put my seat back on.

If you can find one that doesn't let my laptop go higher than 5", let me know.

    Peace,

    Rafster

d00d... get rid of that rotating mercury logo. A mercury is nothing to be proud off. Plus you can get pulled over for moving images
