So it begins. Digital dash underway

I've had pretty much everything I've needed for my car pc for awhile, except the carpc.

It's going to be awhile before I can drop 1000 on a mini-itx, I was going to use one of my spare pc's in the interim, but I'm too lazy to keep dragging it up and down the stairs and it took too much room. (And I don't trust the handle I riveted on)

So I start thinking about using a laptop. I've got a dell latitude CPTv (433mhz celeron) that I never use. If I'm not in my quite wired house, I'm in my car. So I never use it. So if I use this as the first version, I can get started on things and working on the software now instead of September.

So that's the route I'm going. I just bought a docking station (with an extra bay, nic, SCSI controller) for $14 + shipping and a dvd drive. Gotta love ebay

I just finished installing Debian on it. Wasn't too hard, though had some issues with it recognizing my realport network card. (I have a wireless card I'll be using in practice)

That leaves me with the car power adapter, some more memory and futzing with the power button. Not bad for about $100 bucks total and sooner gratification.

    So here's the beginning spec.

    Dell Latitude CPTv 433Mhz Celeron
    Lilliput 8" VGA touchscreen
    Endurastar JK20 Automotive Drive.
Savv RV5000 reverse cam (Servo mounted)
    Traveler Keyboard
    Wireless 802.b card
    Elmscan based ISO scantool
    Some other custom goodies

Still need to pick up a GPS though. I wish I could fit my other JK20 in there, but oh well. Think I'll just get a USB drive enclosure and use a regular IDE drive for media.

I was initially concerned about video, but I've got a Sanyo SRT6000 vcr with all kinds of alarm inputs and outputs I got on ebay for $20. I'm just going to use this for capture wired to the alarm. Hopefully it's 12vdc internally, if so I'll just add a regulator and power directly from the battery. I won't know until I get it.

One of them. But also I have no rear visibility. I'm going for a full digital dashboard here. I'm going to replace my gauges with the liliiput. So I'm going to use that as my rear view mirror. Hopefully underlayed under my "gauges"

    Bluetooth and linux pains

Picked up my LG PM325 phone this weekend and a cheap bluetooth usb dongle.

So I started to figure out how to get bluetooth running. What a PITA.

I needed to make a kernel from source and apply some patches to enable the bluez hooks. This didn't take too long (figuring out what I should answer for all the new config options was bit trying though) but had the unfortunate side effect of killing the PCMCIA network support that went so seamless.

Took awhile to figure out how to get it back. For some reason it will not automatically config anymore.

    I've got to
cardctl eject, cardctl insert and then manually configure the interface and route. Oh well.

First off, with all the different subsystems that bluetooth requires, it's quite confusing to know all the packages out there you need. Finally figured that out, but while I can see the phone, I haven't yet been able to pair with it. I've got the right pin and what not, so not sure what to do. They do see each other though.

I noticed my visibility settings on the phone keep resetting itself so I took out the battery reinserted and it wouldn't turn on at all. I figured maybe it was something to do with newly inserted batteries. I plug in the AC adapter and it's booted with a "Charging" screen. Hopefully, once it's fully charged it will be back to normal.

I ordered some goodies for the laptop. I've got a Docking port coming with an extra bay, scsi controller and a DVD drive and a Car AC adapter. Just need some more mem and the base system is ready to get rolling.

    That's it for now.

Finally got the phone to pair and can "I think" connect to DUN on it. What a god damn pain in the *** this has been. 10 hours of screwing with configs and I'm still not done.

I can't dial over DUN. Just getting connection refused. Never really did ppp on linux before. Not sure what to do next.

Still struggling with bluetooth DUN. Ordered 256mb for the laptop. X is groaning with it's meager 64mb. Outside of the GPS, all stage one items have been aquired. Can't wait for it to all get here so I can start installing.

A rough of the digital speedo

Here's a tiny little taste of what the UI will look like (Quicktime 800k)

Just getting started with the SDL bindings for Perl.

If the vid doesn't work, you can try and right click and save as or open in a new window

    Digital Dash, updated layout

Here's a better look at what v1 will look like.

The circles will be indicator lamps and the area with the coupe will have other OBDII stuff. Note I haven't placed the fuel gauge yet or some other stuff.

I'm sure this will change a bit more before I'm done. The reason the speedo/tach are so high is that a good deal of the lower half of the screen will be obscured by the steering wheel.
