In case anyone was interested to know if using an Avery 'nonglare' sheet protector would provide any measure of glare reduction while providing a decent viewing image the answer is no. I will post before and after pictures in the near future but suffice it to say that it does in fact reduce some of the glare of the touchscreen however it is barely enough to to be usefull and the image quality and sharpness suffers to the point it is not worth it.

I'm having trouble getting a GPS lock with it located in the rearview and I'm not certain what is causing it. I can get 2 sats but no lock. Does anyone think the rearview defrosting wire could be causing the problems?

Taking some advice from this board, I added a ground plane under the receiver which appears to be working well at first. The test groundplane is a 8x8 square of aluminum foil.

Groundplane did not resolve the problem. The GPS is acting like a drunk irishman these days. I'm going to try using power from a 5v rail from the computer PS as opposed to running it straight from the car's 12v.

I put the GPS on a 5v power rail from the PS with the same result. I'm not ready to give up on this thing just yet.

UPDATE:
I'm pretty sure I've resolved the GPS issues. I propped up the enclosure at a 30 degree angle with a full view on the sky from the backwindow and instantly got 8 satalites locked and maintained a 3d fix for over an hour. Looking back and at the pictures is clear that the present location of the enclosure only provided about a 20 degree view of the sky. I'll be making a modification to the enclosure this weekend and wrapping up the first phase of the project having complete all of my original goals.
