Post 1963 VW Split Screen. AKA! Shuttlebus

The DREAM:To bring right up to date the volkswagen Splitty so you coud actually hear something other than the road or blowing wind through its safari windows. Fitted with an original 60's period Blaupunkt radio in the front metal dash and two period speakers in the back the dream was to originally install a NEO MP3 hardrive but after smelly banter from the lads saying that NEO is a NO NO, dated already the owner threw down the challenge and his credit cards to build a media system never seen on the splitty scene.

The PLAN: To bring these living in the past dub owners a huge wake up call!
We decided to keep the period stereo but discreetly hide a quality ICE sytsem which would be run from the leisure battery on a split charger. With a licence to spend he gave us a free rein apart from 'it had to be cooler than the other side of your pillow!' - He even bought a website so we can show the build - I love it when a plan comes together

    Shopping list: 1 x Shuttle XPC System, 1 x Opus 150W power supply, 2 x 200GB S-ATA Hard Drives, 1 x AMD Processor, 1 x 512MB Memory, 1 x Wireless Reciever, 1 x 7" Touch Screen Lilliput Screen, 1 x Bluetooth Reciever, 1 x GPS Bluetooth mouse, 1 x Digital TV Reciever, 1 x Vibe MonoBox Amp, 1 x Vibe BlackBox Amp, 1 x p953 6"x9" Speakers, 1 x Vibe Sub, 1 x Vibe Speakers and A shed load of wires and tools.

The only idea so far is that the system will be controlled by a 7" touch screen mounted above the drivers head.

The NIGHTMARE: To sort all this out but try and keep it period, watch this space for all the highs and lows of the build.

Here are some first images of testing the amplifiers and creating the mounting brackets.

    To and Throw.

Yep were UK based - the van was originally a californian import, and has been here i think for about 9 years or so after restoration - CD will correct me if im wrong!.. we'll post up some photo's of the shuttle, and more installation shots once uploaded - its coming along albeit slowly!

im currently dialling in the monobox3 amp with a black air10 subwoofer - if anyone was wondering about the response it gives.... absolutely stunning - precise punchy and on tap.. surprising as the black air10 has a longer driver throw than the exact8 that were planning on installing!

    Stay tuned.

Well today has been a very productive day, we got the cables laid to power the liliput touch screen (powered by the computers AKA. ShuttleBus's PSU which is the Opus 120W), we allso fitted the two vibe amps into the storeage, got the secondary battery installed and earthed, still waiting for the split charging kit which should be here on tuesday along with the rest of the sound system, cables were installed for the computer switches. So overall today have been a very positive day with the sun beating down here are a few pics to wet ya whistle. Enjoy..

    Removing the head lining...

Installing power lines from screen to the PSU in PC...

    Vibe amps are installed...

    Before the amps were installed...

Is the van originaly made of wood(the inside)?

In the movie texas chainsaw massacre they have a van that looks like this is it the same?
These vans are cool. And your van is coming alone very nicely I like how the amps are set.

I think the inside would have been cloth originaly but it has had a new interior installed to keep the bus warmer as there is insulation ect inbetween. I dont know about the bus being the same as the one in texas chainsaw film but I agree I love these buses, if I could afford one I would get one myself!!

I drove the bus for the very first time...... yes thats right you fomo's iv been waiting a long time to drive ana.. and now i have!!!! yes thats right im chuffed to pieces, it was just like driving the beetle but 15 times better - CD thanks!!

p.s. bugger buying a house im gonna buy one of these instead... if the misses gets cold she can cuddle me instead!

The vw bus depended on what year and model you purchased too - with so many coachmakers kitting out the split screens there are so many interiors.. this one is made from marine ply and was apparantly a git to fit - not so hard to take down mind you!!

Lee - all these pics are of you. i hope ur happy about it as the last project was all me!!

wheres that walking one with the case? its resiviour dogs all over again lol..
