It looks like you have a ton of space to work with...might even be able to go with a bigger LCD
I've built/rebuilt regular PC's for about 10 years now, and been on this board for about 2 weeks or so. I had the idea of a carputer long before I knew about the site, which is cool. Makes me more confident 'cause it's been done already, you know? I just bought my vehicle about a week ago, I took apart the dash on wednesday, there is plenty of room for my carputer.
I am going to go the mini-atx route. Those mobos fit right in my dash, as well as the Opus PS, 2.5" HD, Slot fed CD-RW/DVD, and 7" TS. I will be able to keep my HU also, but I haven't decided on that yet. I've had the Pathy for a week, give me time. Here is a 'before' pic of the dash, I'm house sitting right now, and evidently I didn't upload the other dash pics to photobucket yet...
See? Tons of space. Below the lighter and switches there is another little pocket (you can just barely see it...). Because it's a standard, I don't want to put anything behind there. I will mod the dash a bit and put the heater controls at an angle matching the slope of the glovebox. The top of that will be where the switch panel is. That's where the mobo, hd, ps, etc. will go. It'll take up a bit to much room, so I'll have to blank the front of it with a sheet of ABS plastic, and re-cut everything I'll need.
The touch screen will go where the heater controls are, and measurements say it'll stop right above the pocket. I can either fit a HU in there, or keep it open for other options. Haven't decided yet, I'll keep you posted...
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot. What I'll be using it for: (my budget allows this much for now...)

CD

Just an update...
Shelbrain - The bigger LCD crossed my mind, but what I want to do with it makes for a tight fit height wise. Here is my sketch of the layout of the dash when I'm done:
I have purchased an 80GB HD, and the OBD-II scan tool (ScanTool.net). My PS in my desktop PC is on the blink, so I've got to get a new one (and I'm upgrading my video card from 9600xt to 6800 Ultra - first time trying a GeForce...) so I wont get anything for the car PC this week. Hopefully I'll get the insurance check from wrecking my S-10 and I'll be able to get everything else I need next week.
The slot load optical drive will almost sit right on the head unit, there is only room for about 1/8" but it will look well spaced because the visible area of my HU is smaller than the actual case.
The mobo will be installed parallel to the moniter with the HD in between. I will have to fabricate the mounts for these.
Comments, suggestions?
I think that it is an ambitious project to undertake and I can't wait to see the pictures along the way.

the way you trying to do it not difficult at all. In case you don't have enough room for your dvd drive and your climate control, you might wanna consider cut the cigarett light and those empty switch.

I'll be sure to take lots of pics and show it (especially because I haven't seen anyone else's pics of their pathy's)
Speaking of which, bluehcc, thanks for those pics! I'd like to chance it up a bit, but it looks really nice. I noticed a face plate for something below the switches, what's up there? I would like to keep those switch plates, but I have three more infront of the ash tray on the shift column (I have a standard - which doesn't take up as much space as your automatic) that I can use. I might end up putting the HU down there and putting the climate controls where the HU is now.
I saw a picture of a dash piece from a Nissan Frontier (in my Chiltons manual - or whoever made it...) that seems like it would work perfectly for the CC's. It's a piece that holds a pocket or something, but it's facing up like I want to make my CC's, and it fits right into the dash below the switch plates. When I get closer to install, I'll be raiding a "You Pull It" for any fabrication pieces I'll need.
Thanks for the ideas, I'll keep ya'll posted!
I made some fabrication on my first version of this system. What i did on my first version was that I cutted the cigarett lighter section and put my double din radio on the botton and LCD on the above and relocated the climate control on the very botton where the pocket was. it works good but after few months later someone broke into my car stole the whole dashboard and riped the shift cover. So in my second version, I didn't cut the dashboard. Instead, I replace the double din radio with the touch screen and bought a Nissan Single Din BOSE Radio (all the factory sound system work including CD changer) I located the single din radio on the very button where the small pocket is. I made a fake radio to cover my LCD when I am parked.
But keep mind if you located your LCD in where Climate control is, it definely give you a good view of the LCD. It just pain on the *** sometime to view LCD lower than that. So keep up your work...
btw, are you using BOSE system too?
btw, sometimes you can a a good deal on ebay for a spare dashboard.

I don't want to be nieve, but I don't think anyone will break into my vehicle. I live out in the boonies, and I really know everyone that would be interested in this sort of thing. They are all kids, and I don't trust them for one second, but they know I'll be looking at their house first. If they do mess with the system after it's in, it'll be the last time they do - there have been "charges dropped" against them so many times, they touch my stuff, I'll be pressing all sorts of charges. I'm thinking of having a seperate security camera system in the vehicle, but we'll see... As of now, I'll just be crossing my fingers.
I like the idea of the LCD up higher for me and my passengers to see, only thing is it makes it more obvious for passer-by's... They're real strict about tint levels around here, so I think I'll have to put some more mirrored tint in the rear and some sort of sun screen or shade for when I'm parked.
Yeah, I found out this past weekend (only had the vehicle for 3 weeks) that it's got a factory bose system (IE: amp and speakers - HU was a nissan, but not a pathy... Yeah, that threw me through a loop). I found out when I put my aftermarket HU in. It's a JVC MP3 player (only 6-8 album's/disc) and I can't handle the volume when I turn it up past "20". It goes to "50" - so I'm definately keeping that stock. I might throw a crossover and some subs in the back, to keep the component speakers from working that hard.
I'm very happy with the sound quality at this point, we will see what happends when it is run through a PC. Nissan has won me over completely. I was a Chevy man before (s10 extreme's) but right now it's more about starting a family and having nice vehicles at the same time!
BTW: I am frequently on ebay, thanks for the tip though!
