    1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Hey everyone, I've just started the installation of my first carputer.

    Vehicle:
Green '96 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2 Door

    CarPuter Specs:
EPIA Mini-ITX V series motherboard with 384MB RAM
8GB 3.5" HDD (just a spare, will get a laptop hdd later on when i have money).
    Delorme Earthmate GPS
    Belkin 54Mbps 802.11g wireless usb
    7" 'SUPER' Touchscreen LCD

    Audio:
    4x100W Pioneer Speakers
    400W VR3 Amp
Possibly keep my Pioneer HU installed as well (if i can find a place for it)

Anyway, I just got the jeep and the install started almost immediately afterward. So far, I've got the speakers and the amp installed, ran the main power wire from the battery to the cabin, and ripped apart my dash/center console. I also began fabrication of my LCD bezel. Its too late tonight, but tomorrow I will post some pics if my camera has any batteries left, that way you all can see how much of a mess my jeep is right now with all the parts laying around inside.

Anyway, Progress is coming along nicely (I wish we had a few more hours of daylight though...) and I hope to keep pictures posted.

    Ok, some pictures!

Sorry for the quality, my digital camera REALLY sucks, but you can see what the objects in the pics are.

First pic is just a picture of the dashboard all torn apart.
The second one is a picture that shows more of where the console WAS (its in my house right now hehe).
And the third picture shows the gaping hole where I will be putting my monitor.
Last but not least is a picture of the Jeep itself.

More pictures tonight after I start molding the bezel.

Ok, I got some more stuff done tonight! First thing, I CLEANED!! lol. I just picked up *some* of the trash in there, but it doesn't look so chaotic now.

Anyway, I blocked off the air vent that I needed to, as well as epoxy'd the lcd bezel to the jeep bezel. I also ran a couple of wires, but nobody cares about wires...

First picture is the back side of the new bezel, and the second picture is the front side. The third picture shows the duct tape I used to block off the... guess what... duct! Anyway, Now that I have enough room to mount everything, I just need to start doing so! Tomorrow night, after the epoxy has set up nice, I will start the bondo treatment.

p.s. sorry for the crappy picture quality again, my cam is just terrible.

p.p.s. Does anyone know if it is safe to take the actual touch screen overlay off the bezel, it seems to be glued on. The only reason i'm afraid is because it looks like it has about 10 layers of stuff and i really don't want to kill it...

Alright, I've gotten a lot done tonight.

First of all, no pics tonight... . I'm sick of trying to get good pictures with that cam, but i will post some pictures of how the lcd bezel is coming along tomorrow night.

Second of all, here are some updates:

I started the bondo process on the lcd bezel, as well as hooking up all the wires, and everything in the Jeep, as well as reinstalling the center console. I have all the appropriate holes drilled/cut in the center console (none visible) for wire runs and most of the wires have been run already. I also test fitted the wifi card and gps mouse in a small compartment inside the dash. They fit perfectly! Now just to see if they get good reception there or interfere with each other too much. But anyway, I'm pretty much just waiting on the lcd bezel to be done to put the computer in the jeep.

    Stuff left to do:
Run output wires to the amp location from the computer (forgot to do it when I did all the other wires).
Finish the bezel and paint it.
Put the computer and power supply inside the console (all mounted, just not physically there yet).

I am using the stock dash. If you look at the pics of the bezel, you can see where the openings are/used to be. On the pic of the front, all the way at the top, and all the way to the right, there is a 1 DIN opening, this is where the radio used to be. Then below that, you see my LCD bezel in what looks like a 2 DIN opening. This spot used to be occupied by two holes the same size as the upper one, but I cut out the middle plastic piece because my screen would fit there really well.

Just a warning though, if you plan on putting your LCD in the dash like me, those AC/Heater vents are a pain in the ***.

Well, good news, I finished the bezel tonight. Pics are posted below.

I put everything in the car and tried it, it works great! Although I am going to have to resituate everthing in the center console as it doesn't fit quite as well as the test fits did. But after I get everything hooked up the way it is supposed to be, I will post some finished pics!

    Hows the install going?
    I've got the same jeep.
I'm interested in the how it looks finished.
I've run into difficulties in relocating the heater controls (to where the centre vent was) due to the vacuum pipes being too short.
    Any ideas?

Im interested in the same thing. BTW did you run into any problems with the heater controls fitting in the center vent spo? other than the vacuum hoses?

As far as the hose go if you could find another cherokee in a salvage yard you may be able to get extra hoses and then extend them by pushing them into a steel tube and putting heat shrink over them. You may be able to push the hoses OVER a piece of tube but i wonder about the effect the smaller hole would have on the correct operation.

Let me know what you do.
