Haha, after all of the incredible useful posts on here I have gotten some more pics of my dash fabrication project, and of my amp rack. Here goes:

Here is a pic of my amp/pc rack, on the left is the ampie case, and the right is a power acoustik 600 watt amp to power my mids and highs. The upgraded shaker 500 stereo that was in my car is still being used except for the head unit, and there are 1 8" sub in each door for bass. Pic is when it was about 85 % complete. Will be finished off with a mustang plexiglass cover as soon as I can buy it:

Here is the same rack at nighttime, showing the bright LED from the amp:

Ah yes, now the fabrication begins. Keep in mind that I have never done anything like this, and there are 2 versions thus far. Here is the first step, taking the monitor out of its housing:

    Then glue it into place:

Now it is time to put some body filler on there, I use bondo, since it is easily available:

Keep sanding it smooth, and then you can put some layers of primer on it:

The first time I did this, here is my final product:

As you can see, there are some divots, scratches, and other little imperfections, not to mention that the black i used was too shiny for my dash surrounding, so I decided to start sanding some more, and then came up with a version 2 (only primer so far):

As you can see from this first primer layer, this one is much better than the first. For now, this is what i am going to use, it is fine once it is in the car, and I think it looks damn good for my first fabrication project:

I will paint it black tonight, and get some more pics of it actually installed, with something on the screen. Sucks, this is the last part of my initial project, and I want it to be done. I will also take pics of my xm unit, gps unit, and the car after the weekend. So stayed tuned for more.

Sweet, sweet. Where are you getting your plexiglass from? I've never worked with it, so just curious. I am doing the exact same thing in my trunk. I too noticed some small imperfections in my dash piece that I fabricated, so I painted it anyways. I'm thinking of re-doing it, but man that's a lot of sanding. I'm pretty anal about that stuff, so I know if I put it in my car I'm going to see it everytime I sit down in that seat, which will bug the crap out of me...so who knows. Very small dents, they are just so hard to fix.

if i were you, i'd put another coat of body filler over that just to smooth it out more. The lumps near the center on each side are highly noticable...

But if your happy with that, i guess its okay.

I agree on the corners, although I cannot figure out exactly how to do the buttons area, it looks pretty good. the sides in the middle, actually are covered up by panels on my dash, so you will not be able to see them. I will be putting a tad bit of filler in those corners, sand it really lightly, then im going to apply my final layer. If it still doesn't look right, then I will try again next week sometime. As far as the plexiglass, I will go to either Lowes or Home Depot, and I am getting a rectangle to put underneath my cutout. I have a top carpeted peice that fits into the oval, and on top of the plexiglass. I do not really know much about it, but my idea is to have a large engraved running mustang on the plexiglass... hope it works out.

You should get a Chevy logo instead of that stupid mustang. I have killed horses, it isn't that hard at all. BANG!

Speaking of my weight, I see you have plump fingers. I am sending you a gift pair of boxers and I got the husky size, "Let's not let our weight become a problem"
