This is very impressive. I was just wondering what the total cost of your system is so far?

Haha - I prefer not to count that

    Motherboard: 215
    Extra RAM: 13
    HDD: 44
    802.11 Bridge: 50
    IDE Adaptor: 7
    ATX PSU: 49
    El Cheapo Mouse: 8
    Replacement Car Stereo: 40
    LCD Display: 13 (ebay)
    USB Radio: 9 (ebay)

I can't be bothered to try factoring in things like breadboards, switches and LEDs, the tools I had to buy, postage or broken parts... but the total cost from that list comes to:

    448

I's estimate I've probably spent closer to 650 when you factor in all the above that I left out... although as I was sponsored through my last two years of uni, I had a 200 grant that took the edge off it all

Small update - I've started working on a fascia for the unit, but that means the system's been in pieces for the last couple of days. Just started a job after graduating, but hopefully this weekend I'll get it back together. Waiting on components for a ground loop isolator from Maplin

Edit - and start-up time is now down to 25sec due to suspend2

What technology for fascia are you going to use, Shinny?

When it gets a litle more complete, I may put it up on sourceforge... it's kinda tailored to the exact hardware I've built, so you'd probably have to start altering it yourself to get it working.

No idea yet... I'm thinking something very simple to begin with, but not fully researched it yet.

    Time for a little update...

    The good:

Been working on a new front for the stereo. The plan is now to set three buttons below the display, one at the top right, a jog dial (hopefully doubling as a button) to the left and volume to the right. I'm using 2mm acrylic sheet and the cut-up original fascia held together with an epoxy resin glue, which is working really well.

I've also added a toggle switch to choose between always on, always off and ignition modes and a home made ground loop isolator.

    The bad:

I think my root filesystem has corrupted AGAIN!! I've not had time to check it out, but it's refusing to boot. I hope I can rescue the partition, but it may be yet another reinstall for me.

    The ugly:

I've managed to cut the power line to my LCD's backlight, so that'll be a tricky piece of soldering. Also, my ground loop isolator now appears capable of generating white-noise when the car's ignition is off, and my alternator hum appears to have got worse, not better - this is tested with the PC off though, so it could be a different story when it's turned on.

Once I've got the thing working again, next on my list is to hook up and on/off control for the LCD's backlight, and hook that to the amp's power line (current the amp is always on) - thus avoiding the nasty beep that comes through the speakers on POST.
