I was bored and decided just to get on with what I can get on with.. might take a bit longer to buy the computer itself though, spent far too much money lately.. but now the case is in I just want it all working so might just buy the stuff anyway

I'm going to temporarily mount the screen using the standard bracket thing just to get it all in and working, and to adjust the computer/software for driving etc.. once it's all working fine I'll think about the in-dash stuff..

Haven't really looked at the dash yet but if I can get the heating controls to either move up 2 inches or down 2 inches then there should be enough room to mount the screen. Just depends how much modding the heater controls need as I don't fancy breaking them really.

If you are running your Power wires up the right side you can thread them through the rear frame nicely. Dont forget there is a load of space in the rear frame with a large cubby hole on the left by your PC and if you put the jack in a waterproof bag you can mount it in your spare wheel and get some more space on the right hand side.
Yep I went for 3M on your advice and was glad, as it's just about the perfect length really. I've got the cable running down the left side.. under the rear seat, down the left side door sills, past the middle seat belt cover thing and up under the passenger side of dash. It hides the connections perfectly and the screens own USB lead will then go through the back of the center dash under the left side dash to connect up.. the holes are already there, no modifications or cutting was quite suprised how easy it was really.

They are completely hidden by the panel

Power wise. Well I felt a bit stupid for running the VGA and USB but not the power. Seemed a bit silly but after actually running the USB etc there's not much room left so I think I'm going to run the power under the rear seat (middle) and through the center console (hand brake place) and then through the dash.. either that or downt he right hand side door sills.. not really sure how to get from the inside of car to under the bonet yet though.. need to get a haynes manual really and check it out, as I'm not a mechanic, in fact I'm useless with vehicle mechanics haha

Anyway.. the power will lead into a fused junction box to split off power leads for the PC and for the amplifier. I'm a bit lost as to where I wire this into the ignition though so that the amp and pc come on with the ignition.. was wondering if it'd just connect up to the HU power leads??? as that'll already be wired to the ignition???

I know how to build a computer but am still learning lots with this CarPC stuff.. just taking it one step at a time and will see how it goes Got lots of plans for future additions to the system but for now just gotta get it up and running.

    I now have the PC.

1.4ghz Duron (AMD), Not the fastest ever but should be pefect for this application.

Got to get RAM etc, think I got a Hard Drive laying around though!

So.. just need an Opus 150W and screen now!!! 8)

    <EDIT>

Update... just ordered carpet (hope it's a good colour match!) two fans + grills, amp wiring kit for power.

So just now need an M1-ATX, power dist block and screen to get everything running!!!!

Still deciding on sat nav software, really want Mobile Impact as front end but for some reason keeps crashing on my PC Probably will use Destinator with Free Drive for sat nav.

    *** UPDATE ***

Saturday 28/08/05 - Boot install pretty much finished.....

Well well well.. been a long time since last update, I've been mostly waiting for things to turn up, like carpet, which I had to go to about 3 different shops, then order TWICE off the net just to get the right bloody colour!!!

Finally found something on ebay, won for 5.51 + postage and I received a massive roll of good quality carpet that matches pretty damn well!

So the case got carpeted up, I've fitted 2 x 80mm case fans to the side with shiney chrome fan grills.

I've mounted the PC inside the case and used a HDD mount from an old case to house the hdd. I've mounted this vertically as apparantly the HDD will last longer in the car or something.

The only thing is I need to move the mobo to the right side of case and the HDD to the left. It's akward the way it is with cables etc not reaching properly etc.

So here we have it, a 90% finished boot install. It's not the best but I like it and am happy with how it's turned out for my first ever time making anything. I do have plans for boot install take 2 but that'll cost a lot more as I'd need a mini ITX pc this will have to do for now!

Hope you like it, let me know what you think.

p.s the door isn't on yet I know. I'm (hopefully) mounting the amplifier (JBL 4/3/2 wiith any luck!) onto the outside of the door, this should keep it compact and looking cool. Once this lot is installed I plan to get a JBL tube subwoofer for the other side of the boot

Next job is to get the power wiring in. Which I hope to do today/tomorow (well most of the wiring anyway) I think I'm going to run the main power, remote and speaker cables down the left side door sill and then run the single lead for the screen (ITX combined power/usb/vga lead for the ITX Plus) and a single USB extension down the right side door sill.

I can't afford the screen yet so just got to wait a week or two before finalising the install. I was hoping to have it all running before 13th Sept as I have a 300 mile trip to do and fancied sat nav but I'm not sure it's going to happen!

I have D3 maps, Mobilie Impact front end and FreeDrive.. can't get any of it to instlal though until I get this carpc running.. I think the HDD is fooked as it won't boot

Ummm, just a thought, I always found it better to separate power and speaker cables whenever possible. Less line noise. Now I know someone may say, there is no such thing, but trust me there is. HTH

Ok cool, are the speaker cables okay to run with the screen cables though? Or the screen cables okay to run with the power? if that makes sense, as I can only really find two routes from boot to the front (left door sill and right door sill) so need to run speaker cables with something else really?
