    Phase 2 Peugeot 306 Install

    The car:

    The Reasons:

    * Sat Nav
    * MP3 music collection/playlists
    * Vids when parked up etc
    * Because I can

    Done:

    * Run VGA/USB extension cables from dash to boot -

    In Progress:

    * Run Power Cables from battery to boot into fused splitter. - Wiring on order, waiting on info about M1-atx before buying
    * Boot install, with space for amp and easy access to Pc etc - 30% done.. box made, waiting on carpet and pc fans.

    Not started:

    * Temp. install screen with standard bracket
    * Amplifier install, mounted to PC casing.
    * Reverse camera install
    * GPS Mouse etc install
    * Proper dash mounted screen install
    * Adapt steering wheel volume controls to work with CarPC

    Probably more that I will add as when I think of it.

    Aims and future ideas:

    I want it to look discreet, OEM, standard.. not easily nicked etc. I don't want to lose too much boot space or make any major modifications to the car, as I am designing the system to be easily removed when I come to sell the car. Future upgrades are endless really, so many things that could be adapted to work in a car etc. For now my aim is to get a working system installed with a clean boot install and a simple bracket mounted monitor.. then from there it's time to improve it and mould the screen into the dash.

    I will update here as and when I do things, but all info + more will also be on my website (when I get round to making it )

    *** UPDATE ***

    Friday 12/08/05 - Cable running...

    I started the install today, the easy stuff first

    Yesterday morning I ordered 2 x USB extension leads + 1 VGA extension lead, both bought from ebay, I was pretty suprised to see them turn up this morning... very quick service!!

    So, rear seats up, cables ran under rear seat, all the way down the left hand side door sill area. No pictures of this, pretty mundane boring stuff. But got to be done.

    Very easy to do really, just move the rear seat up, pull the door rubber seal thing away and you can slide the cables underneath.. between the front and rear doors is a plastic guard thing for the seat belt. Just slide the front passenger seat forwards, undo the two bolts on the plastic guard thing (torx) and pull the guard away slightly, you can run the cables under the carpet from the rear seats all the way down to the dash... to get the cables down past the carpet on the front passenger seat, just do the same as the rear.. pull the seal up and feed the cable down and press it all back. Making sure the seal sits properly with the carpet under it etc.

    No idea if it's standard, but under the passenger side dash there was already a hole in the carpet, so just run the cables through the hole into the under-dash area, cable tied to the other cables to keep them out of the way, all discreet.. can't see the cables anywhere other than the boot... all doors/seats move/open perfectly fine.. you don't even notice the cables are there and the USB connections are then nicely hidden under the dash out of view/harms way!!!

    Next step(s); run power cables/speaker cables and start the boot install!

    Updates coming soon 8)

    *** UPDATE ***

    Saturday 13/08/05 - Boot install..

    So, decided to get on with the boot install this weekend... popped over to B&Q to pick up some materials and a few tools.. Not forgetting some MDF and plenty of advice from my dad.

    Now.. A few things I will say before people take the **** out of my boot install.

    1) I've never so much as owned a peice of MDF in my life let alone cut one and made something out of it

    2) The only woodworking tools I have are a new saw bought from B&Q and just some boxes to lean the wood on when cutting! No profressional workshop here I am an electrician.. we don't cut wood!!!

    3) The boot install MUST be easily removed, the whole system must be easily removed... but look as standard as possible.. so I had to design the casing for the PC to look "okay" in the boot, not take up much space, be STABLE and easy to remove when required.

    and lastly 4) The Peugeot 306 boot isn't really all that ideal :?

    Anyway... I didn't really bother taking pics as I went along, thought it'd be a bit boring so just showing you the progress pics...

    I started off with two sheets of MDF and 3 lengths of 2x2 and 10 fingers.

    Made cardboard templates of the left side of boot where this case is to sit, lots of tape measuring and cutting later I end up with the main frame and door and only 9.5 fingers

    Cut my thumb with hacksaw.. just slipped! Thank god it wasn't the big 22" wood saw :shock: It's cut from the edge of thumb through to the nail (that's quite deep :P ) But I just wrapped it up in a towel and carried on, albeit with 1 hand (it's hard to cut wood with 1 hand!)

    The inner board is where the MOBO will be fitted. I hope to god it's wide enough.. I think I cocked the sizing up and have a feeling the PCI cards will hit the door but can only wait till I get the mobo and cards to find out :cry: I have a way around it if it comes to it though.

    Anyway, here it is with the door placed on.. not fixed yet as I've just sprayed it black.

    It's being carpeted.. but I sprayed the insides black just so it looks a bit better when you open the door also sprayed outside black as I was bored!

    Will post pictures of it painted and in the car tomorow! It doesn't look tooo bad if I say so myself. by the time it's all carpeted up it should be quite good. Not bad for first ever carpentry though!

    Once all carpeted up, it will have 2 PC fans on the top face with metal fan guards, the amplifier will be attached to the door (outside of it)

    Let me know what you think so far!!

    Pics of it in the boot coming tomorow... Next up is the temporary monitor install and getting the whole system running and reliable

    Looking good so far .... I agree the Pug boot isn't the easiest to work with ... looks like you have a good box so far, can't wait to see the finished product.

    Here it is fitted to the car.

    Some points to make.. it looks a bit rough at the moment but once it's all carpeted up and a few things revised it should look a lot better.. the door DOES shut properly without the push-latch on, I need to adjust the latch so that the door closes properly.

    All in all so far I'm quite pleased with how it's turning out, it's not the best ever but it's the first time I've ever made anything out of wood and it all fits nicely/stable etc so I'm proud so far but of course the next revisions and maybe boot install take 2 will be a lot better

    Will post the updated pics when my fans/guards turn up and when I find some carpet that matches my boot

    I think that it is very impressive for a first time around and I would be happy to take the box off your hands should/when you move to phase 2. As for the pics, the rear left speaker looks like it gets in the way of the box, but I am sure you accounted for that...good work.

    holy ****. you have only had tha car for a week and you are past my isntall stage!

    ****!

    Oh but you havent started on the dash yet - good luck with that!

    did you end up using a 3m VGA? looks like you did as mine has about that much left after going all the way into the dash. What are you doing about the power wires? If you are running your Power wires up the right side you can thread them through the rear frame nicely. Dont forget there is a load of space in the rear frame with a large cubby hole on the left by your PC and if you put the jack in a waterproof bag you can mount it in your spare wheel and get some more space on the right hand side.

    When the parcel shelf is down the speaker clears it fine I did wonder if it'd hit but after some cardboard template testing it clears fine. The cables all move fine when you open/close the boot too so nothing catches/hits
