Sanding and filling - It looks rougher than it is.

Here's a shot of some lightweight body filler to skim over the fiberglass. It'll make a nice smooth surface for the finish coat. I didn't do some of the area to the left because I had another change of plans that you'll see later.

Here's a shot with the sandwich mocked up.

Slim Slot load Laptop DVD Drive needs to go in...I planned on it going under the screen but it would be in the way and DVD's would hit the shifter...not good. I decided to go to the top of the dash - I had holes in there I was going to have to repair anyway, so I decided to cut it up. First, I wanted the drive to be removable - just in case anything ever went wrong with it. I devised a retention system that I thought was kind of neat. I bought a cabinet latch system - you've all seen them...it's the kind that has the magnet in a mechanism that, when you push the cabinet door it pops out enough for you to pull it open. Well, I gutted the magnet (didn't think it'd be a good idea near the drive...) and put it back together. I got this other type of cabinet latch that consists of two wheels mounted in a small frame and a 'C' shaped metal clip. I screwed the 'C' to the spring loaded mechanism to create this:

On the drive enclosure I mounted this:

That gave me this (yeah, I probably should've vinyl dyed the whole enclosure - even though it'll only ever be seen by me when and if I have to pull the drive out:

I then built a frame I could 'glass in to the dash (shown here without top so you could see how the system works), mounted the mechanism to it and it worked nicely. This way, I could mount (fiberglass) the drive enclosure flush to its surround and to get it out, all I have to do is push the drive in and it gets pushed out enough so I can grab it and pull it out. It needs a decent amount of pressure to pull off of the mount, which is good as I don't want it to come shooting off when I powershift 2nd

Genius , I guess you made the wires longer? (so they dont resist when you pull the drive out).

I am thinking about doing the whole trunk with the nitrous bottle in a recessed fiberglassed area, the PC and the amps and stuff... The only problem with that is running all the damn wires up there... I have thought about trying to get the pc in the dash area behind the LCD but it could get tight and I'd like to 'showcase' the system. Also, I am going to be controlling the HVAC with steppers and a controller with a custom plate I made up and that takes up some room behind there. So, that kinda makes it only possible to go in the trunk with it...

Yeah, it's an old car but I love it! The pics are kind of deceiving - the camera really picks out everything! When it was clean and in tact , it looked pretty good (except the paint). The exterior will look good when it's all done, I promise...It's a lot of fun, too! (Well, when it was on the road - I haven't been able to drive it for a while...)

Thanks Yup - I'll just leave some slack in the wires so it will allow the drive to come all the way out so I can disconnect it and reconnect it if necessary.

That's all I have pictures of right now - I am going to star fabbing the drive area above the screen. I should have some pictures of it soon.
I am determined to get it finished by the end of November. I have to have this car done by spring. I want to paint the car as soon as the dash/center console creation is done. I'll install the intercooler at that point since I'll have the bumper cover off for prep. I will be starting the new motor install after that and the turbo install at the same time. Then the AEM software, which will be hooked up to the carputer and can be tuned from the touchscreen. Oh yeah, I do have some other pics...hold on...
