Here's a pic of the keyboard install. It isn't finished - I still have to shape some of the MDF but you can get the idea.

Here's the airbag wheel I am going to gut. My car doesn't have an airbag in it, so this will make a perfect stealth keyboard install location.

Here's the keyboard I'm going to use. It's USB. I have to take it out of the case and modify the bezel.

It fits in there like it was made exactly for this application...weird.

Here's the MDF nest for the keyboard.

Cut the width - next cut the height.

Now I need to shape the MDF on my sanding wheel and fiberglass the bezel I cut into the top. But you can see the rough shape.

Here's the cut bezel - I'll fiberglass it to the top. The whole assembly will be mounted in a 'box' that can be fastened to the wheel into where the old airbag cage was bolted. You can see the guide lines I marked to shape the MDF.

Here's what it will kinda look like - still need to shape the whole thing - then, it'll drop just below the level of where the original airbag sat. I'll mount a small piece of plexi to the underside of the airbag cover (drill out the rivets and it'll come off so I can use it to mount to the new 'box' containing the keyboard) that will fit into a routered out area so keys aren't accidentally pressed when the keyboard isn't in use.

I'll post some more pics as I make progress!

How are you gonna pass the wires? (use the connector for the airbags?)

That's a good idea -I'll have to look how many wires they have there. I looked at the way they had it from the factory and there's just a bunch of slack wire as the wheel turns approximately 1 rotation each way. I figure where that recess is, further under the keyboard, I'll drill out a square hole through which I'll pass the USB connector and run the wire exactly as they have the horn and airbag wires. That should assure me clean wheel movement.

Mine, oddly enough, has only 2... Guess I'll just have to run the wires as they did from the factory...
