HD radio / Sirius HC1

time for a little testing and setup for this weekend. I received the usb cable from mitchjs to connect the SIR-SC-H1 to a pc. it works great! cant wait to set it up in the car and replace the defective alpine unit. nice setup with optical out.
screen cap of the interface from mitchjs

hardware test of the sirius unit

I also tested the Directed HD radio. I didn't have a usb > serial adapter so I didn't test the software from mitchjs. I will test ASAP. the unit worked great! i didnt have an antenna to test with so i just connected the supplied antenna cable adapter/extender across the table and it picked up all the local radio stations and also a couple of HD radio stations i didnt know existed. this may be the best solution for AM/FM/HD radio available.

I will need to tap off of the DSATX 5v to power the directed hd unit

I installed the second Polk/Momo sub now that I have the Alpine MRD-M1005.

mad scientist view with the MRD-M1005 below the MRV-F545

I'm thinking of mounting the amps on the back of the sub box here instead of a false floor

then building a equipment rack to house the pc and all electronics in the location of the mach 460 speaker mount. This would also seal the speaker openings which should quiet the trunk noise into the cabin area.

now i need to research making my own interconnect cables between the H701 and the amps. I also need to study on tuning with the Alpine-H701. I hope I can get a base tune with the h701 mic and then fine tune later. maybe an h701 guru lives within a 100 miles I can visit .. lol

as usual it never ends.. more to come.

    alternator fire

OK, I know what your thinking .... too much ampere draw on the alternator and it burned up.
Well... Im not so sure about that. Why? well I have only the PC and the MRV-F545 connected. I have physically installed the MRD-M1005 but it is not connected electrically. Plus, I have been running this setup for a good while now, although I have had alternator problems in the past, it has never been when I had a carpc installed. And in this case its the same situation.
I went out to start the cobra to drive to work, dead battery, jump it off and drive to work. When I try to leave from work, dead battery, jump it off and drive to advance auto... install a new Red Top Optima battery under warranty. Drives great .. stop, start several times without any problems. I had to remove the main power wire to the carpc in the trunk to install the new battery and didn't reconnect for the drive home. I get in the cobra the next morning to go to work, starts up as normal... get out of the driveway and smell what i think is a hot belt... pull over .. pop the hood ... smoke coming off of the belt. pull back in the driveway .... interior now full of smoke... turn the car off.. pop the hood and the alternator is on fire... hold the water hose on it for a minute or two before it will go out.... meanwhile my wife is getting everything out of the car in a hurry.... she was trying to pull out of the driveway as I was pulling back in...

what I think at first is wire harness damage... is actually vacuum line damage

The alternator was replaced under warranty from my local shop that is a napa dealer

The repaired vacuum lines with a 5/32 straight tee ... we will see if it holds up..

The $2 dollar question.... where does the white wire attach?

When I pulled the wire loom protective sleeve back to check for fire damage, the white wire pulled out free. Looks like it was trimmed and stripped at some time. I cut back the loom and there is only a green and yellow wire, no white wire to reconnect. also, the Haynes manual for 94-98 mustang/cobra has a different color code .. I posted on www.stangnet.com for a little help. but im not too worried... the loom had original tape on it and didn't look like it had ever been removed.

It would be interesting to know how much current the original factory Mach460 system pulled versus the current carpc/Alpine setup.

I should be back on the road once I have a little more muscle to release the belt tensioner to reinstall the serpentine belt on the alternator.

Unhappy the end of a project -- the hard way

    ok,
sad to say my cobra is gone.... someone ran a stop sign yesterday 6/25/08 and I hit their truck. so, that ends the 96_cobra_project. Nobody was injured... just bumps and bruises and aches.
I have a 69 mustang I am building and also a 99 F150 extended cab. So, we will see which vehicle wins out for the new project install. MP3car forums will be a deciding factor on the next install.

I'm so sad to hear that. Your car was the inspiration for mine. Luckly everybody's ok.
Keep up the good work. I'd like to see more Mustangs around here.

Sad to see. Glad it's ibuprofen rather than hospitalization.

Were you able to salvage your sound and computer systems?

thanks all .... yeah I was able to pull all of the audio/video gear out minus the Polk separates on the passenger side... it had a hole in it somehow... but I couldn't get all of the cable that I ran under the carpet etc...... dont forget to wear your seatbelts !!
The more I think about it..... if I didn't have the Steeda molly subframe connectors welded in ... it would have been worse....
I plan on finishing my 69 mustang now, from what I receive from the insurance settlement.
