Are you still running the stock speakers?
You can do a DDX7015 for less (Crutchfield is a great place for pictures, but their prices blow). But you're right, it definitely fits in the same price range as a nice carputer.

AFAIK the only way to retain the stock speakers would be to get a headunit with a built-in amp and then use a conversion harness to connect to the stock plug. I had planned on replacing my speakers anyway. I'm thinking of Polk db6500's for the front doors, nothing for the back doors, an Infinity 7541a amp, and a JL 8W0 subwoofer to go under the passenger seat. I was going to get a Raam 10" sub for under the passenger seat, but he is taking sooooo long to make them, I might do my own. But I'd have to do the 8", because I couldn't make as big of an enclosure with my skills .

I'm doing some work on making a skin specific to my own needs. Not something I'd release, because I'm not going to put any features in it that I won't use. Here is the main menu screen:

I'm still running on my stock speakers. My soundcard feeds a JL amp, feeding the stock speakers. Had to re-run some wires, but it can be done.

Just push it forward -- it goes surpisingly far. I'd guess there's maybe six inches still covered between the ridge in the floor pan and the back of the seat when it's pushed forward. And it's deep -- probably around 5 inches or so of airspace under the seat (I just put a 7-port powered USB 2.0 hub under the seat, I'm going to velcro it to the top of the PC case .

Excellent! I'd like to see pictures & such, to compare how you're doing it with what I've done.

I just recently added an amp (Infinity 111x4) and speakers (Polk db6500) to my setup, because it was getting kinda boring without tunes . Here is a pic of the amp, got nothing of the speakers:
