    1987 cougar carputer.....

    First off my dash

pleanty of room, ac/heater never worked, so I can actally use all four spaces if I want to.
top is empty, middleish is a cd deck, middleish #2 is heater/ac, and bottom is cigarette lighter. All four are full sized din slot, with a pretty good amount of room in back of them.
I plan on mounting the computer in the wheel well infront of the wheel's, in back of the door.
Okay, here are my plans, and this is what I have gotten

full sized p3 motherboard (I also have a fanless 500mhz mini-itx, but decided it is too gutless)
standard tray type dvd-rom laptop drive, adaptar on the way hopefully
2 gig(for testing) laptop hard drive with adaptar
usb keyboard/mouse(smaller then normal) and a trackball
cheap 5.1 surround sound card, just for testing, will upgrade if I am happy am not happy with it
few other things that I know I have forgotten

    things I have planned
I want to have a external(not flush mouted) screen, and I want to be able to revert back to a stockish stereo and dash, if I sell/wreck the car
I want to do 5.1,(I know I will get flammed for this, but whats the big deal, I run a couple of extra wires, and if I dont like it, I will just rewire it to 2 channel) with a center speaker where the clock(the square hole) and vents are. I should be able to just block off the vents and fit an encloser in there
probably going to go with a couple, maybe 5 51/4 infinity speakers, with a free air sub system, I havent decided on the subs, cause when I say carputer at an audio shop the freak out and tell me it wont work.

    anyways, 5.1 surround sound
    24v cop/military 300 watt dc-dc power supply(overkill, but I plan upgrades, major ones)
dual batteries, with 130 amp alt upgrade
    few external usb hubs/enclosers
I want to try a cheap lcd tv/radio/XGA thingy, just for kicks, as well as a couple of tv outs just for fun/dvd's, prolly a zenarc without touchscreen
    pci pcmia controller card
pcmia wireless internet, using cellphone bandwidth(not a cheap plug into cellphone type) ment for portable laptop
wireless network hub/network card, so I dont have to sit in the car to upload mp3's

    Now lets go into details/pricing
p3 motherboard free, + gas to get it
standard tray type dvd-rom laptop drive, adaptar on the way hopefully$3.50 + shipping
2 gig(for testing) laptop hard drive with adaptar hard drive free, adaptar $8.00 locally
usb keyboard/mouse(smaller then normal) and a trackball,? had it laying around
cheap 5.1 surround sound card, $10 like 4 years ago.
    24v cop/military 300 watt dc-dc power supply $50
dual batteries, with 130 amp alt upgrade around $180 with battery isolator
    few external usb hubs/enclosers $ 50
cheap lcd tv/radio/XGA round $100 locally
pci pcmia controller card $20-30 ebay
pcmia wireless internet $60 a month, free installation/parts
wireless network hub/network card, so I dont have to sit in the car to upload mp3's free, have lots laying around
decent video card, around $50 or so, unless I find one that works.

So far everything looks fairly good. little over budget already, but I see this is a common occorance here . hopefully a couple of trick/one of a kind products here, hopefully a couple of firsts as well.

So far what do you think? I have alittle bit more money to throw at this as of late, and plan to make quite a bit of progress soon. I also plan to mix it up alot and throw an ungodly amount of power hungry parts at this. so it will be lots of fun.
Progress,.... that is what I keep forgetting ;)

check your specs. Unless i'm mistaken, the center and subs channel jack are the same. You'll need a high and lowpass crossover, i believe. If you wan't be deterred, have fun with that. Yeah, i'm doing my stuff form barters and preexisting. I STILL have a good half grand to spend since i need a screen. If you ever get tired of the screen, let me know. I'll have friends who'll want it when i finish my setup ;-).

Infinitys are what i'm using (going to be using when i install). Circuit City is having a sale right now for their subs if you're interested. 2 for 1. 100 for 10" 110 for 12". Audio shops are stupid when it comes to this. We're out of their league. Just remember to have a 4 channel amp for your speakers. Personally, i have an oldschool Rockford Fosgate 4040DSM. Now only do i have front and rear in seperate channels, i can dasiychain my amps. You wont' need that with 5.1. Actually, you may want TWO 4 channel amps, alteast one with buitl in crossovers. Have your left and right signals split between the front and rear inputs and use the buitl in crossovers to set the front (center) to high pass and the rears (subs) to low pass. I'm just wondering how you'll direct the power... just read what i said about KISS and interface and distractions on yrou last thread. If you want to view MY progress, here it is

I may have 256 pc133 I may let go for a decent price, lemme check on it and I will let you know.
If you have ever looked at the outputs, if you unplug just the sub channel, you now have no bass, you can just get a 1/8 inch stero plug spit to two rca cables and you have split the channels, and plugs right into the input for an amp.
I havent tested the range between the speaker ranges, you may get alittle bit of midbass, maybe even alittle bit of high on the sub channel. I had a 3 1/2 inch sub or so and a couple of 1.5's on my current computer surround sound, so I honestly dont know. I would imagine it would be very little if any though. One of those trial and error things. here is how I am gonna split things,
I have a cheap sony 444wx4 channel amp, but when all is said and done, it is about 50 or so watts perchannel, not earth shaking, but like I said, I plan on doing major upgrades, and this is just to let me know how things go. Then I will just run a 50 watt or so amp for the center channel, sticking it under the front seat, and then splitting the bass channel up into the trunk.

I want to run possibly 2 10's and 2 12's, just to say I did. But for now, I will be okay with okay speakers all around and no subs. honestly, 250 watts would be alot better then what I have now.

them old school amps can still hit pretty hard. My dad had a 15 watt amp that could shake the windows with about 10 speakers on it.

You're lucky if in the whole valley you can find a shop where an installer even knows there is such a thing.Remind me to tell ya my experience when I had a piece of trim made for my old monitor, and they couldn't figure out what the 15 pin connector was for.....

Ummm,I hope you mean a 12v dc-dc psu.....otherwise,you're going to have to buy a step up converter.
The alternator upgrade is a great idea, anything else is most definitely overkill.
You'll like the xenarc, and you really don't have to have a touchscreen.I gutted a keyboard for it's controller, and use a few lit momentary switches as control buttons.
A decent video card can be had at ebc for less than $30,as you don't really need to play doom3 in the car,do ya?

1/8" to rca is exactly what you need. I have my home system wired that way so i can get sound on my pocket pc. Red GTi VR6 is into sound competitions. Cheap amps= cheap sound. Its true too. good old school amps rocked, i am using one myself, but make sure its from a GOOD company. I hear coplaints about sony. Most small woffers won't give you the bass response you, or anyone, woudl like. You need subs. Take advantage of that CC sale i told you about while you can. i just got my basslink...i won't be needing it :-)

The glove box is the smallest I have ever seen. It is only maybe 4 or 5 inches deep in a V shape.
I will get better pics when its light out. Also, not all of these pics are of my car.

How the debate rages on. Windows vs. linux, laptop vs. desktop. Who will win?

I decided I want to have both of both.

I want to put a small linux version on my crappy 500mhz mini-itx board, and throw in a p-4ish laptop with a broken screen.

Laptop, I will just extend the power button, use a dc-dc solution, and pull the cdrom and put it in a external enclosure.

Mini-itx I will use a regular dc-dc power supply, with a startup controller or what not, and throw in a remote starter in the car so the mini-itx loads up automatically.

Linux,on the mini, will ONLY play mp3's and dvd's, assuming I can find drivers and what not for both for linux.

The laptop will have windows 2000, along with intergrated LAN, and a wireless car, with misc. usb devices. (GPS, external hard drive ect.) And I will run a wireless internet card, using the PCMCIA slot.

    Now I have :

    Windows w/

    Internet
    GPS
    DVD
    decent stability

    Linux w/
    internet
    mp3
    surround sound
    awsome stability

Now there are pro's and cons to both laptop and desktop's, but I basically overcome both.

Music will play, as soon as I get in the car, windows will hybernate, and load up in 20ish seconds with gps and dvd/cd drive.

That way, I can hack linux to be really small, and equal good performance ment only for sound with a slower motherboard, and have windows with everything else I need. Copy music converted to mp3's off of windows laptop to linux hard drive, delete mp3's on windows and forget about it. Now to play dvd's, I can just acess the windows dvd drive through the network, and mount it as a regular drive in linux and still get surround sound.

As far as the screen/kb/mouse go, I will just get a switch to switch between computers with. I will set the linux computer on the mp3's I want, and switch over to windows and use the gps. Instantly switch between the two of them without any real drawbacks.

Anything anyone wants to throw in here? Anything I missed?

Trunk space isnt that big an issue, if at all, so I really am not worried about that aspect.

    Lemme know, thanks.

    *edit*

Oh yeah and the laptop will hybernate automatically after 20 or so minutes running off of the battery.

And what is cooler then having a wireless network hub in your trunk?

Now, if you;re running both, i've only seen this integration done once at a house successfully. Maybe i'm deprived of the linux world, but i'm interested in seeing the results. Power issues though. Make sure you fuse these goodies right

and where's that pc133 ram you talked about
