2001 VW Jetta
I have been trying to start this project since November. I assembled the major parts by December, had a system up and running on my desk, and decided that the long weekend would be a great time to dive into the installation.
The car is a 2001 VW Jetta. I have decided to keep my head unit but relocate it to where the ashtray was. That is probably going to be the hardest part of my install.
1st Step was to remove the radio and A/C control cage. That was a very difficult task because in the jetta you have to remove the entire dash to do that. This is what it looks like:
The jetta has a double din slot, some cars have a double din h/u, some have radio in one, cd changer in the other and others like mine just have a cubby hole. The lilliput 7” does not fit perfectly into a double din slot, so we had to take it apart and get the dremel out.
Held the screen in place, dribbled some CA glue on the corners, and then poured epoxy down the sides.
Put the screen back in, A/C controls in, and trial fit in the car:
Put the cup holders back in (may replace them with a slim slot load drive, but there is a perfect spot in the glove box for that)
To make the install look OEM, tapped off the piece and mixed a micro-balloon filler with epoxy and spread it into the cracks.
Plan is to sand this layer down and add a thinner coat on top and paint black.
I have been debating where to install the computer, it fits well under my passenger seat, but I could also put it in the trunk, on the driver’s side there is an opening behind the wheel well that would be perfect.
Well its a slow process. Been sanding and reapplying filler to make it smooth. Having some trouble with it, hopefully next weekend I can finish the screen.
looks like you went alittle filler-happy. hope it all comes out straight.
its not too much filler. I just wanted to have smooth tapers down to the screen.
