Thank you for the kind comments you guys! The project is coming along REALLY well. I got iGuidance 2.1.3 intergrated well, making it look like the iDrive theme via theme.ini (colors and whatnot). Waiting eagerly for iGuidance 3.0!
So today's progress.. case is ALMOST done.
My cutting setup. Dewalt 18V jigsaw with BOSCH metal cutting blades. Piece of particle board setup as a fence with C clamps holding it down.
Clean cut for doing it with a tool not design to make super straight cuts.
My sheet cut.
Cut even more. The little 15mm sided ears are going to be used as mounting brackets. They will stick out even when the case is fully enclosed (think: stock CD changer).
The piece sitting in my bending brake. It maxes out at 16 gauge, this sheet is just that. I bent the bending brake. It was freakin hard.
One side done.
Two sides done. Notice the adjustable wrenches, the original bending brake handles bent on me, haha.
Making the holes for the mobo. My original idea of individual holes DIDN'T work. So I scrapped it for this..
I used the stock ATX cutout plate fit into a big cut out.
Sitting on four standoffs (maximum), the standoffs self-tapped, but I will still put a nut on the opposite side w/ threadlock.
View of everything in place. PSU and HD not yet attached, holes for PSU not cutout.

Planned sides, these will allow me to screw in the top.
Or perhaps on the top instead? Better airflow.
Instead of 60mm fans, 40mm ones fit fine too.
Clearence... very very tight, but fits.
More work to come tomorrow... w00t.
niiiice workI like it ( as I like AL ) . Just one though - I think that you don't need that fans. I made something similar, but after one day running I have disabled my fan ( it was too loud) and nothing is hot - everything is running ok.

Thanks man! Aluminum is nice, it's a good metal to work with. I think the fans will definitely benefit though. Plus, it'll be in my trunk, so no worries there.
Okay I tried mounting the case where the stock CD changer is (was), on the bottom side of the rear shelf inside the trunk, and MAN does it transfer noise into the cabin. I can even hear the CPU fan! So basically that idea is scrapped, which is fine by me, I think I found a much better place right next to the tail light area (in a little corner, behind carpet), opposite side of where I'm putting the amp (it'll be on the left side, the PC on the right).
Let's see how that works.
So far I ran my 4 gauge amp wiring from the battery to the rear. Went through the stock firewall holes, went under the door trim and ended up in the trunk where the amp connects. Time to mount the fuse panel.
wow this looks like an exciting project!
GIMME GIMME update, more pics, just bought an old sc710 (stock stereo) for my v70 1998. The way you mounted the screen in the old stereo housing inspired me quite a bit![]()
Very nice install indeed!
I used an SC710 as well for my donor. Here are some more updated pics. I had to finish it up quickly so that I can use it while on my trip to San Deigo (visiting gf at home, and then coming back up here to SF [she lives in SF]).Originally Posted by roedkaelk
So the effort was to get it all working and in the car... it took something like 3 days.
Looks just like the stock trunk, and it is.
But behind the carpeting lies my amp. Mounted using a custom bracket (made out of scrap aluminum I had from building the case) that bolts into some support bar. Red wire is coming from the battery, black wire attaches to the chassis for a ground. The ground is exceptional, somewhere near 0.01 ohms between the end of the ground wire and the negative battery terminal... perfect grounding point. All the wiring will be cleaned up, I was rushing to finish it, hence the mess. Also, heat is not an issue at all. The amp runs very very cool.
Carpc TEMPORARILY mounted to the back of the seat. I will be mounting it on the opposite side of the trunk, just like the amp is. However, I've had not time to do this yet.
The LCD. As you can see it's still bondo'ed, and not finished up. As I mentioned, the goal was to get it in and working, not making it look pretty.
And it of course still pulls out, just like the stock deck.
Pretty good fit. Needs more work though.
More to come!!
