Nice write up. You should do one explaining how to get sound from the PC to the BMW speakers.

this would also solve your "man I don't want to remove my dash to put in a screen" issues

    Hey e39dream

I had a look at that, but wasn't convinced. I wasn't able to determine wether or not the unit would allow bidirectional messages on the IBUS, and I'd like to control the stock radio via the PC by sending it IBUS commands.

This USB IBUS adaptor does support bi-directional messages for sure.

I've also got one of these on the way (not from www.incarexpress.co.uk, somewhere cheaper but no link to hand):

It's a little more costly doing it this way, but I like the idea of having modularity as diagnosing things / upgrades become easier. One potentially negative thing about this soundlix adaptor is that there is no mention of level matching, so I may have to do that myself somehow.

.. and who said that I don't want to remove my dash hmm? I just don't want to hack the original for when I sell the car

    Very nice!
I like the way you did it with the switches. I will probably do so myself.
On my mini-ITX the power connector is on the other edge, so I do not have to dresel that much :-)
    I like your attitude.
    Cheers, Blof
