wow guys, I feel bad for having not replied to your posts, I haven't been to the site in a while.
Anyway, to answer flyingwil I had to paint it cause I sanded quite a bit of the OEM opening to get the screen to fit in there with the buttons and all. Underneath the black, the bezel is some kind of bondo like color and so I had to paint it. I suppose I could have chosen to only touch up the affected area, but I doubt I would have been able to do that without making it look obvious and bad.
I had the hp lappy mounted under the passanger seat with the dvd drive facing the passenger door and basically only accessible if you opened the passenger door and bent over from an outside position.
Anyway, that worked for about 3 months or so (until about the end of July), and I didn't take any pics sorry. the hp was awesome because the auto hibernate feature meant i could just cut the engine and get out of the car no problem, and a $3 button wired to where the cigarette lighter used to be worked great for those 3 months, but it ended up being the un doing of the whole thing. See I had to soulder the wires from the power button onto the main board of the lappy (which i did). But then being the lazy *** I am, I never properly sealed it back up the way i should have, and i eventually left the windows down on a muggy night, and when i went to work the next morning, i pushed the power button without even thinking about it (as i had done for like 90 days in a row) and I heard a bzzzt and the hp was dead.
It was a rookie mistake, and I definately learned my lesson about exposed wires and moisture in the air. they don't mix
So, that sucked for about 2 weeks while I decided what to do. I ended up getting a mac mini and installed windows on it using bootcamp pending a mac frontend as easy to use and feature filled as centrifuse or roadrunner
Anyway, The Mac for right now (since august lol) sits on my cebter console covering two of the cupholders. This is temporary until I get the carnetix power supply?shutdown controller for it and then I will mount it under the passenger seat like the hp was. I don;t have any pics of it right now, but I'll see if I can hook some up this weekend.
well, the guys that wash cars came by my office complex today, and I had them detail up my truck, so I can post the pics I promised since my taco is no longer totally dirty.
anyway, here's my temp ghetto install as it stands now.
first, the obligatory exterior shots
now for some interior photos
these pics were taken at night with my gf's Nikon D50. As you can see, I've changed my frontend from roadrunner to centrafuse.
I like roadrunner's skinability and customizations, but right now I just want something that looks nice and does what I want without having to super tweak it. That's the mood I've been in for a few months anyways.
Who knows, maybe in a couple of months I'll be back into roadrunner or that new flash one I saw the other day (I forget the name of it). That's one of the best features of a car pc. I'm not locked into how pioneer or alpine or anyone else thinks my software should look or what it can do. I can change and change and change until I find something I like, and then change again just for the hell of it. Anyways, good times. I'll update the thread when I got the 1900 power supply/controller and mount the mini under the seat (surprisingly, it doesn't fit in the glove box)
Do you know how long i've been waiting for these pics
Do you have trouble viewing the screen? I have the same int. and when i had a doubledin screen, i'd always have it tilted back since it sat so low in the dash. When it's time to do mine, i'm going to mount it slightly tilted back for sure.
do you have a radio hidden somewhere ?
For future reference, here is my worklog. I haven't started molding yet, i'm still waiting for all the pieces to arrive. I expect it to look pretty darn cool though, i think it'll be the biggest screen in a 95-04 tacoma dash. Measurements for the center black bezel is right at 9" at the biggest part
hey i was wondering what you think of that screen i'm in the process of installing a carputer but i'm just undecided on which screen to go with i recently just made this piece to move my double din down so i can put the computer screen up top. i didn't want to cut the dash apart to fit a screen in because i'm going for a factory clean look i was thinking of a 8 in because the opening is 8 inches diagoinaly but now seeing you install with the 7 i'm thinking the 8 will be to tall. also i noticed lilliput made the exact identical screen as the one you have. basicily just looking for a little info before i go an buy a screen and it turn out to be something i didn't want
First off, that's not a tacoma interior, so posting in this thread is sort of pointless. Second, viewing angle on that pocket looks too low and inconvenient, i'd angle it more towards your face not the rear seat. Third, you should have made the bezel AFTER you figure out which screen you want, and fourth... do you want touch screen or no
