2005 Subaru Impreza WRX + RoadRunner

Ok I finally got a hold of the base of my project, last night, a Toshiba A55-S1063 laptop with broken LCD. I had no idea it would be such a pain to get a broken laptop on ebay. I also swore to my self along time ago that I'd never buy a celeron, guess that didn't work out.

    !New Computer!
Toshibas CD Drive turned out to be shot, and I found another online that was cheap and small. (didn't know at the time it didn't have a battery but I'll worry about that later)
Computer specs:Medion Sim2000/MSI s250 Testing OS and hardware
    Celeron M 1.4 ghz 400Mhz FSB
    40 GB HD
    DVD-R
    512 MB PC2700
    Built in wireless
    3 USB 2.0 Ports
    AC adapter included

    Screen: Testing
    K301b motorized indash 7" widescreen

    GPS: Arrived
    HOLUX GR-213
MS S&T 06 (thinking about switching to Destinator)

    Sound:
Turtle Beach Micro As soon as I get my employee discount back
    JVC KDLH-300 On Hand
(conservative system comeing when I get back to BBY for christmas)

    Power: Bench testing
    TARGUS APM10US (Tested no problems)
Meanwell 5v power regulator for USB stuff
No Remote Start, I havn't decided yet when i want it powered
    Remote Power Button

    Other: Testing
    USB 2.0 Hub (working)
Panel mount USB ports for removable storage

    Software: Experimenting
    RR
    Win XP

More pictures comeing soon. Any Questrions/Sugeestions/Comments about my planned setup are welcome.

Id suggest dropping the chunk on streetdeck now before you get too comfortable putting up with the free front ends. If you start with it right from teh get-go, youll never have to deal with convincing yourself to buy it later, and with mappoint included on the dvd, you wouldnt need to purchase streets and trips. Other than that, looks like the specs are pretty decent. Definitely upgrade that system memory like you plan. Good choice on the Holux, its what i have in my 04 WRX and works beautifully mounted under the clock pod, on top of the air vent with some velcro tabs. I even get a decent solid lock from several satellites from inside my garage with the door closed.

GOOD LUCK with your build, and please post some pics of the car and system!

hmm that's weird... i USE roadrunner everyday, and not once has it felt like i am "putting up" with it. it is very usable, very customisable, and like all great things... FREE. it is constantly developed, has a myriad of plugins, works on any hardware, and has a huge following all offering support.

If you buy SD now, you will probably regret when you realise you could have used a free option which probably works better too. and has more functionality. and easier to customise. and doesn't require proprietary hardware.

Yeah I think I'm gonna stick with RR, I've already started playing with it alittle, and i look foward to the amount of plugins availible. Also i already have S&T's and theres no way I'm gonna drop the money in SD. (if i was willing to do that i probably wouldn't have bought a broken laptop off ebay

    Progress

This is the 2nd post from the CarPC (sitting on my desk). I've had some PITA USB problems associated with a SIS 7001 USB controller, which aparently is guarenteed to give you problems. Took me three nights of work to get USB 2.0 to work.

Also had some trouble getting the K301 to fit in my dash. Aparently the WRX dash opening is alittle smaller than DIN sized. I ended up buying a dremel and learning how to use it on this (not the best idea should have practiced on something else). Pictures of it installed are posted above.

I'm thinking about Switcing to destinator as getting S&T to work with RR is not working really well.

I actually have RR running quite stabally (just as long as i don't screw with it) but i think i may switch over to freeway ultra once my install gets more finalized. It has only the features that I am am really interested in, music, video, and GPS, with some nice little extras, not nearly as complicated as RR.

I went on an electrical shopping spree today and I'm going to mock up my power board today with the day off work, so pictures should follow.

OK after my shopping trip and getting Carl his lunch....

I started working on my powerboard for the trunk. After realizeing that to switch from running to acc there is no loss of power to the acc line, I simplified my power setup. Now I'm only running two relays, one turns the USB Hub and LCD on when power is the acc line is hot, the other does the same for the Laptop Charger, however I can switch the acc line to constant power to power the charger any time I want, reguardless of the ignition state. Below is my power board. The empty space will hold the Targus charger and cables, the relay to the left is for the hub, then the positive bus, the Laptop relay, and the negative bus. The enclosure is the 5v regulator and the gic outlet is for the Targus ( I'm also preinstalling for a mono sub amp, hence the large gauge power buses. power the the trunk is via a 4ga amp wireing kit.)

I Havn't run my switch wires yet, also I plan on installing a fuse before the regulator.

OK havn't posted in awhile. I've been using my old Emachines laptop since the beginning of the summer since my ebay half-top stopped working. Now I'm fed up with having to reach around to the back seat to turn it on.

I tried to wire up a remote switch, but i can't seem to tap into the switch. I'm PCSing (first move) to San Antonio, so when i get there I'm pulling the computer and selling it on Ebay. After that I'm gonna get a Jetway system in eitehr an Voompc or Voom2 case from someone like MitxPC, Maybe even here (probably not) so I'll upate again when i start to get system number 3 sorted out
