    2007 Mazda5 worklog

This is my worklog for my new car I have since Februari this year (2007). I had to remove my carpc install from my old car (Peugeot 307SW) and that gave me some time to re-think the new setup in my new car.

    Carspecs:

2007 Mazda 5 touring (Galaxy Grey)
    Will post some photos later

    Carputer specs:

    Custom case
    Mainboard: VIA EPIA SP13000
    Memory: 512 MB
    Harddisk: 60 GB 2.5" Hitachi 7200 RPM
    Power: M1-ATX
    Radio: HQCT
    Screen: Lilliput 7" touchscreen
Extra: Velleman K8055 for steering wheel controls

    The screen setup:

The Mazda 5 has a stock radio build into the dashboard. The standard stock radio does not have a CD player built in (although it looks like it) and you have to pay an addition all 300 euro the install a cd-player into this radio. I decided to remove the radio and install a new piece of dashboard with a double (it's really 1.5) din opening.

This it piece of dashboard that is replacing the stockradio.

Easy to mount a screen behind it.

Because the opening is not double din the screen does not fit into the opening itself and must be place behind the opening. Since the opening is clean by itself I figured I could make a frame that would fit behind the opening and the screen (like a passepartout). This would leave some room for a couple of buttons as well.

This is the frame i fabriated from a piece of epoxy board (for a PCB) with a copper layer on the backside.

Taken from the left side. You can see how the buttons are fitted. I also made room for some additional electronics (relay for a delayed switch-on of the screen) and for my USB interface board (Velleman K8055)

Mounting the frame to the bezel. (Bottom)

Result.... Damaged the touchscreen a bit. Scratches from a metal piece laying under screen. Not noticable in the car.

    Carputer setup

I have been using a VoomPC case for my previous install. It was working well for me but I needed more space. So I found an old plastic case laying around the is perfect in size.

The case. The RCA plugs go to the HQCT radio tuner. I'm planning to use the HQCT as the audio input selector, volume and tone control. I have been writing a plugin foor Road Runner to do this and it works very well. This allows me to use the audio from my pda with TomTom navigator to be mixed with the audio signal from the carpc or the tuner. Above the RCA connectors are two USB ports.

The HQCT installed. Still need some tidying up of the cables. Test the setup but got some interference of the power supply when using the radio. I'm going to build a case around the HQCT using PCB material and place a filter on the powerlines. The HQCT was performing very well in my previous setup but it was then built into a seperate case.

A complete overlook of the case. As you can see; need to tidy up the cables...

    The screen working

Next week I'm going the mount the Mazda5 dashboard into the car. Took some picture to show you how it's going the look like...

Main screen of road runner with my Madza skin. To top button on the left side next to the screen is the power button. It allows my to power off the screen when the kids are looking at a DVD in the back on a screen attached to the tv-out of the epia. Would be nice to have the DVD play in the back and have navigation on the front screen....

The three other buttons are not assigned yet. They willl be connected to the Velleman K8055 interface board. Lets me assign a RR command to the buttons (different function per screen)

    Audio browser

    Audio player

    Audio player with navigation screen.

    And FreeFone screen.

    Plaace?

I've a Mazda5 too and what you've done is really a good job. I'm interested on doing something like that.
Where did you put the case?

Did you make the RoadRunner skin?
    Thank and greetings from Italy

The case is under the passengers seat. Everything is in the car and working at the moment. I'll be spending my vacation in Italy this summer. In the Logo di Garda area. If you're around there as well feel free to come and take a look.

I have made the skin myself. But re-did most of it because I did not like the color setting of the previous one. The new one is using transparency so it's very easy to change the background.

a clean install so far, I like it.

I really like your skin layout, im in need of a new skin for a 768x1024 portrait setup. How long did it take to make this skin? Have you made all the pages yet? And did you have some photoshop knowledge before you started?
    Continued Worklog... Upgrades in progress:
*15.4" WXGA LED backlight touchscreen upgrade
    *Custom fiberglass dash bezel
