Mercedes A Klasse and the simplest interface that can be

    My wife's car...

finally she decided that she would like to have one of my gizmos inside her car but she wanted it to be simple as a car stereo...

3 virtual buttons and that's it, no more need of a touchscreen except for the gps which remains annoying due to keyboard, anyway i continue tampering with my software solution that will avoid me adding an horrible keyboard.

I used evrouter to define only 3 keys, up, down and enter keys.

The commands sent with the Powermate remains the same all time, only signification of keys depends of the context, the real stuff is managed by my program.
It seems that this is a pretty nice solution to let the eyes on the road while the voice synthesis says what is selected. Simple as or simpler than a car stereo pictures of all the thing running hopefully soon...

The dash in this car is not so friendly to make something nice and clean, even the motorized touchscreen is a real pain. In the first space, when the screen would deploy the some commands would be hidden behind it. The second space which is under the first would be a nice place but....the screen would touch the shifter while deploying so no choice, the screen won't be inserted in the car stereo's possible places.

As this car is a nice toy, i don't want to tear down the dashboard so i chosed a solution which is simple and will let me affix the screen between the climate ducts which are not visible on this picture, they are near the windshield. To mount this properly i ordered an Arat pod i will modify with a flexible silicon tube to hide wires inside.

Hardware and the pod with the rubber wires duct, now still missing the screen which should arrive next days...and i will mount it inside the car

Power amp as she said she doesn't need huge sound in a so little car...so i bought a tiny 2 channels Sony's Xplod as we don't want to crush the car's structure

here we are, i stoled some time today to bring the screen in this car, it was not as simple as it could seem...everything is glued on the dashboard and i had a big difficulties to pass the wires so they remain invisible but it was worth.

The single and simple wire you will can see...a simple clean install

Arat pod on which the screen is affixed.

The screen is not a touch screen, i don't need it anymore, i modified my software to be used with the Powermate only as the screen is a bit far from driver's seat, still no keyboard and it won't be anyway.

    Yay

Well it looks like an added piece that's right but for me the objective is complete, i wanted something to be clean without messy wires everywhere.
Next sunday i'll try to steal some more time to insert the power amp and the computer. I already have an idea to make them remain completely stealth. I also have to make a plate on which i can affix the Powermate knob. The plate will replace the headunit's space, no need anymore of this crappy stereo

After that, i plan to add a 15 " top flip screen for the rear passengers.

Took off rear seats to have space to pull the wires

    Getting rid of the stereo

The place where the power amp is now

Each vent, just under the tiny window is going to help evacuate temperature generated by the power amp.
Same thing on the other side of the car where the computer will be inserted next time.
In summer time when the car is exposed to sun rays and because the hardware is completely enclosed, this will help to keep the hardware in
reasonable range of temperature. Hot air is always going up.

power amp can't be seen anymore from inside or outside, next week it'll be the computer's turn et voilą a nice stealth install.

Now building the part needed to replace the car radio and drive the whole computer with a simple Powermate...

I used an old dvd player face i cutted in two parts to get something regular on both side, some more work to do with this and hopefully the final result will be simple and elegant. This thing have to be ready for sunday when i'll mount the computer in the car.

Ahhh i can work again on the Mercedes
The support for the powermate is near to be finished, below with primer, i had to correct the general shape which was not perfectly aligned due to the two parts assembled in one.

    Ok, the faceplate is ready

She wanted it has the same color as the car....so glossy chrome plexiglass to add depth and chrome pins to break a bit this green

If it was for me i would rather do it in some dark color or black...but it's her car

I had to add light and contrast on pics as they were really difficult to pull off the very dark inside of the car or my camera is maybe definitely dying

    NO MORE HEADUNIT
