i'm completely torn. i so very much appreciate all of your sentiments, and for those that i have, i've really enjoyed the pleasure of working with you on your projects. There's such a wonderful sense of community here and support. I feel like it would be a disappointment and a disservice to this community to quit...
but on the other hand is that cold touch of reality: the fact that right now, I don't have a secure place for such a project. every time this happens, despite having insurance, it puts me out $500 and days without my car. I face rising insurance premiums. And the certainty that it WILL happen again is undeniable. Sadly this is a story that almost anyone here can tell, some more than three or four times.
i just don't know.
dang man.. sorry for the bad news... i was really feeling your project too on that si, i love that car and how its a sedan w/ speed... the way you set your carpc up was sweet and clean man.. the buttons you made for it before the install was flawless man... im really inspired to do a similar to your project but w/ a pc instead of the mac...
all i gotta say is keep your head up man, tomorrow is a new day to shine and do something you like.. dont let s***** people put you down and keep you from shining man..
hope everything will work out for you man.. really after this thread, i want to insure my stuff in my car too... that is really really sad stuff that happen...
keep us update on what you decide though, i would love to see a new project going if possible..
Dont let other's actions effect the your life. There are a few things you can still do. First is a real alarm, I suggest a Viper 5002, with remote transmitter. The new LED for the Vipers is a VERY bright blue they could see the LED from across the room.
Second is tint the windows. Most tint also works as a security device . .here's how. When they break the glass the tint keeps in in large chunks forceing the theifs to put their hand through the glass, and with any luck they'll leave alittle blood behind.
Third Remove the trunk release cable from inside the car. Now you have to have the remote to open the trunk (keep a spare remote).
On a side note with the new immobilizer system I dont know of any 2006 Civics being stolen (unless it's done by a dealer insider). The immobilizer is part of the ECU and is matched to the car. So the car is safe.
Been watching this install since its inception, and learning a good bit. I drive another "target" car, so I know how you feel being under the gun. There are a few things you can do to protect your stuff, but by FAR the best advice is to get the Hell out of the hood. I know that's easier said than done, but if you lived near me, I'd be there tomorrow night with work gloves ready to load your stuff into a truck. Living in fear isn't living at all.
By that same token, you probably shouldn't give up something you love because some asshats broke into your car. I know this is not the first time. But it could happen with a stock stereo. Or they could just take the car. What then? No car? Sell it and buy an 88 Olds Achieva that no one wants? Where do you draw the line when it comes to giving up things you like because someone else is an asshat?
Do what I did. 1) Move out of the hood. Maybe a smaller apartment in a better place. I highly advise getting out of apartment complex life altogether. Those places are gold mines to thieves. I now live in an apartment - the second floor of an old house that's been split into an upper and lower apartment. Look for these places. It's well worth it.
2) Tint your windows. Go to the police and wave the reports at them. "People keep busting into my car and I'm sick of it. I want you to write me a permit to tint my f'ing windows for security purposes!" Some will do so. I wasn't so lucky, but I know people where were. :D
3) Watch where you park. Is there a safer place two blocks away? Carry an umbrella and park there. I do this often.
4) Take that insurance $$$ and put it into a good security system and a stealth install. You definitely have the skills (which I envy greatly). Now you'll have the money to put some thought into it and really make it something awesome.
Cliff's Notes: Don't let the asshats drag you down. Move to a safer place and do the world's greatest stealthputer.
I drive a Subaru. All Wheel Drive. Mine has an immobilizer in it, so it's hard to steal. However, there are documented instances of cars being stolen anyway. How? The fricking thieves drag it onto a flatbed. All you have left is the skid marks where the car tried to resist.
If they want it bad enough, they'll get it. This is why we pay the mob... er... insurance companies every month. You pay for coverage for a reason.
God, this is making me paranoid.
Just when I thought the worst was over... i get a tow truck driver who was more than willing to take chances with my car.
The insurance company sent him to pick up my car and take it to the collision center for repair. The parking structure it was parked in has a low clearance so i told them to bring a suitable truck for it... so they send a guy with a flatbed. I don't know how stacking a car on top of a truck for a low clearance situation is a good idea, but hey, i'm not the towing specialist.
I even see he has the right kind of tow bar to just lift it by the front wheels and do it right... but instead lifts just the front wheels on the flatbed, levels the bed, the car is pointing 45 degrees up to the sky, unsecured and hanging by the winch. As he pulls away, other drivers in the garage are waving at him to let him know he's dragging my tailpipe along the ground:
and then he tries to take a turn to descend to then next level, and realizes the car just wants to go straight, and it goes straight into the edge of the flatbed which caved in my rocker panel. It's much worse under the car than you can see from the side... but still:
I'm just waiting for Chip Foose to jump out from behind a bush and tell me this was all a big prank and that my turbocharged civic is waiting for me at the shop.
:faint: **** this.
does this mean that your new exhaust and body package is on order?
well some people are just plain stupid, the good thig is that the insurance covers this too, the bad is that this extends you fix time another week, make sure to push for new exhaust and if they dont give it to you i have a 3 month old set laying in my shed... :D, its yours if you want but you have to drive the 3000miles though...
Again the stupidity and lack or foresight amazes me, this same crap nearly happened to me too, i forced the gut to lower the car down so my pipe wont get ripped off...
PB- i think one day your avatar is going to lick a hole through my screen and spill green everywhere.
anyway... it did get to the shop and they're gonna take care of everything... I'm just gonna have to drive Piglet (My rental HHR) for awhile.
On a more serious note though: i really appreciate all the support you all have shown me. Life has had a tendecy to lay it on pretty thick for me lately, and it really warms my heart to come here and mingle with like minds. So truly, thank you.
In the meantime, while i'm deciding what to do for myself, if any of you colorado dwelling people want to stop by my shop sometime and make stuff for your car, or if out of towners want help with a project, just PM me and we'll work on it. Regardless of whether i decide to build up my own car again, i do know that if i'm not fabricating something, i'm going a little crazy.
colorado here i come, a nice drive throught the mountains :P....
hope you dont go nuts driving piglet, i personly hate getting the same crappy car time and time again, i got a red mazda3 3 times :(, and when my car went in for a recall i got a 1991 nissan sentra, it got a good 10-15 nutral drops and a slam in reverse on the highway :D J/k (not realy)
for all your troubles and woes, you get a lick from my av. kitty, it makes ALL feel better.
Today i turned my cameras back on and found one was dead(thanks for makeing me feel paranoid), i had them off now sitting there for show for half a year.
PM me if and or WHEN you start a new project, I'll be restarting mine again soon.... i hope.
I'll fed-ex you my dash so you dont go crazy, that way I'll be done.
