My understanding was that MCE2005 was sort of a mix between pro & home, but I don't really know the details.Originally Posted by frodobaggins
So, I guess the better question is. What does XP PRO do that MCE 2005 CAN'T do?

XP Pro can join a domain. XP MCE cannot. That is the only difference.Originally Posted by ose-ml320
There's more to it then that, Pro has remote desktop connection host. You can install RDC client from your pro disk or download it free from MS.Originally Posted by voidunknown
along with:
Multi-Processor support.
Automated system recover
Dynamic disk support
Fax
IIS web server
Encrpyting file system
Group police
Intellimirror
roaming profiles
Sysprep support
SNMP
SAP agent
Network Monitor
Most of which you only would or could use if you join a domain, so the statement is'nt too far off, certainly the main difference.
I've been reading the above mentioned link, http://www.htpcnews.com/main.php?id=mce2k5_1, in the review he mentions:
MCE is a integrated HTPC application that is based off of Windows XP Professional. Yes I said it and you heard it right, Windows XP Professional. However some of the networking features have been stripped out. In the current version of MCE you can not join a domain, but Remote Desktop and IIS are still available to you.
Can someone who has installed 05 verifiy that it will not connect to a domain? I have a domain at home and I'll need MCE 05 to connect to it for internet access and file access. I currently have MCE 04 and it does connect to the domain. I don't want to upgrade to 05 if it's not going to connect.

I have tried it with 2005. It will not allow you to connect to a domain.Originally Posted by TimmyM
Well that sux. I might have to wait for an upgrade to 04 or figure out some type of hack then.Originally Posted by voidunknown
Thanks for the info.
No, from what I read if you upgrade from 04 to 05, and don't do a strait away install, you WILL be able to keep your existing domain functionality.![]()
Try ghosting your HD to another one, perform the upgrade and see what happens. If it doesn't work, you have a complete backup to restore. Since you have a domain running at home, I'll assume you know how to ghost and have a spare HD.![]()
